N47 - water pump, stat and belt
Hi all
Car at 125k miles, 2013 520d n47T, is it worth changing the water pump as preventative maintenance along with thermostat and belt? Or is it overkill? I can't see much info on them failing on the forums. Also, seems easy enough to diy? Many thanks |

don't think it's worth it unless you're having issues or excessive noise. Looking at the manual the first step is to "remove engine" hahaha but i mean if you have the time and the resources go for it.

Having only ever replaced these parts on my old vag car's at the same time as timing belt I'm not sure what the usual schedule is with these BMW's! Will the water pump give me signs it's on its way out or will I suddenly lose coolant one day? |

You do realize the engine has a chain, correct? |

I'm assuming he means the serpentine belt, there is no timing belt as stated. The water pump is right on the front of the engine. Remove belt, acoustic cover and EGR, and it's right there. Doesn't seem to be a major fail part, so I don't know that I would replace it but it's only about $100, so if you're already in there and it makes you feel better no harm in replacing. It's electric, so it could possibly just go out, or it could also potentially start making noise, I guess it depends if it fails electrically or mechanically. If it's mechanical you will probably start losing coolant or hear noise, if it's electrical it will probably just die and your car will start overheating.

If I'm sat on the motorway at a constant speed it maintains around 92/93 degrees c, if I push it hard it will rise to around 97ish but quickly settles back down
I'm aware my n47 has a chain, I meant that with my previous vw/Audi cars they all had timing belts, which when off you would also change the water pump as a maintenance item. |

The N47 water pump is mechanical, and should probably be changed around 100-120k miles, simply because bearings eventually wear.
The timing belt driven water pumps were really important to change, because if it locks up, you're guaranteed a destroyed engine.
