2016 320i b48 broken piston - stage 1 bootmod3

Hi, while coming to a stop suddenly the car started shaking and an error came up on idrive "drivetrain malfunction".
Shaking while stationary Vehicle idles rough and hard acceleration.
Any thoughts on what it could be?

Could be lots of things, injectors, coils, spark plugs, ect. Sounds like there are misfires somewhere, but you'll need to connect a code reader and use an app to pull codes to get an idea of what it could be.

Or take it to an indy/dealership and have them diagnose it.

Error codes from bm3..
Can it be caused by bad fuel?
Should i replace coils between cylinders to see if it's a coil issue? It's 73,000 km engine..

So i went to 2 indy shops, both of them ran a compression test and cylinder 1 gives 130, other gives 175. Next step is to open the engine to see what's causing it. Btw, both of them told me it's because of the tune i have (bm3 stage 1). I'm starting to believe it's true... Any thoughts/similar issue to anyone?

They should do a leak down test on that cylinder before just opening the engine... ideally you want to know if it is rings, valves, etc. You could also boroscope through the plug hole. Opening the engine is basically the last step.

I have the same issue. Although it happens only at particular times

2016 BMW 328i

I also get the drivetrain malfunction,

Although I only get it if I’m driving 70-80 mph for extended periods of time

The car functions perfectly if I drive it between 60-70.

I’ve had it diagnosed, bmw wanted to check the entire drivetrain and charge me 185 for it.

Then someone else was telling me the fuel pump is going bad.

Total bullshit. That happened more than a year ago, and it still purrs like a bmw kitten (when driving slow).

I can speed up but. it becomes a problem when the drive is more than 45min-1hr

So.. talking about rings, pulling out the piston as we speak.
Seems like b48 engine can't handle bm3 stage 1 ?

Woof. How many miles? Those cylinders look like crap, maybe nature of the beast with modern pcv systems. But potentially detonation? I won't assume I will leave it to the experts on here...

These pictures look a lot like examples of Low speed pre ignition. What engine oil was your car running? Any datalogs of the car before the incident happened? I'm currently running the same tune and this accident has me thinking about moving to stock

From what i could find on the internet, the B48 engine requires 5W-30 or 0W-20 oil. Oil could be one of the causes but it might be the low/mid end torque of the bootmod3 tune. Did you ever lug the engine when travelling in the city? Also, what is your current plan with this engine/car?

The internet is full of misinformation. 5W-40 is perfectly OK, especially in hot climates. The source for this information: BMW. The engine damage is probably the result of the BM3. You can only get so much out of any engine.

Yeah that may be true but isn't stage 1 ots quite a conservative tune. I get that stage 2 greatly enhances the risk of such failures but stage 1 shouldn't ideally

Something no one has asked... what octane tune were you running? Most likely this happened because you were running a high octane tune (93) on garbage fuel. I've seen it before... if you look hard enough you will find examples on this forum of the exact same thing across different engines.

Bootmod3 OTS flash tunes are perfectly safe so long as you "follow the rules" and maintain the vehicle properly. Literally hundreds (more like thousands) of users of these tunes with a very very small issue/failure rate. Again, across different engines. Not specific to four or six cylinder motors.
