Trying to learn how to tune my N55 myself
What is the best way to get started in doing this? I know I'll need mhd or bootmod3 to flash to flash the maps to my car. But should I be using tunerpro, or some other software? And if I should be using tunerpro, how do I get my stock map into the software so I can actually make changes? Any help is much appreciated and I'm really excited to start learning this stuff my self!

IIRC somewhere in a thread someone mentioned that it is possible to tune yourself with Bm3's stock map, you cant do this with MHD to my knowledge, good luck

I believe BM3 has a map editor feature but i am not a BM3 user so can't elaborate much more than that. Would recommend just doing some research or contact them.

Also, i came across this, but it seems some N55 information might not apply to our F3x N55, so keep that in mind. Very in depth, though. https://cobbtuning.atlassian.net/wik...ThrottleTables

Two days later.............Where to buy cheap N55?!
Not to discourage you - and I have no idea about your background - but the N55 DME is MASSIVELY complicated. Best of luck, and let us know how you get on

BM3 has quite a few maps for free that you can edit if you have PWG. With EWG you only have the stock map and the stock M2 Map. The Map Editor lets you overlay maps so you can study the differences.
For example, I have an EWG N55. So I load my stock map in the editor, then I open the M2 map to compare to the stock map. The editor highlights all the tables that are different, and then you can open each up and see what is actually different. There's a description for each table that tells you what it does, and some suggestions. Not always crystal clear, but better than no help at all. Great way to learn about the tables before you try to make any changes. When I make my own tunes, I always start by setting the boost ceiling/floor values to a fairly low number, along with torque ceilings. This helps if you make a mistake and aske for 30psi accidentally somewhere else. You do need to be willing to accept the risks though. With great power comes great responsibility!

Why is the question, if you were toying with simple obd1 e36 I would get it but why tinker with a $18000-25000 car and risk messing it up? Do you have the background? A custom tune can be had cheaply during promotion weeks or any of the ots maps work well enough. Good luck mate, let us know how it goes.

For naysayers soon to follow this post, I am a software engineer. I can read tables and code just fine

Please shoot some youtube video on this topic if you can find the time. I considered self tuning also but.....no, way too complicated for me and the BM3 platform was too young at the time.

If BM3 allows you to compare two different maps that seems like a great starting point. I wish MHD had something like that, i would study it just to see what they are changing. I honestly don't think they change that many tables between different stages. I've watched a lot of videos on tuning other platforms, and usually once the base tune is set is just a matter of scaling a few tables and lots of stuff happens automatically because the tables are already setup to adjust based on the two dependent variables (i.e., Z value calculated from inputs X and Y).

Halim, the tuner of the OTS maps of bootmod3 released a guide how to tune using bootmod3. it is available if you join the facebook group "bootmod3 map editing"
also, bm3 allows you to overlay the m2 map over the standard n55 ewg map so you can see BMWs tuning strategy for increased output. ecutek also released a tuning guide and you can find those same tables in bm3. search the web and youtube

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1732327 But developing an tuning strategy that is effective and safe in terms of what tables to modify (i.e., the "input" to a tune) is a entirely different ballgame on modern cars. |
