Would you sacrifice your car for job etc?

Just thinking as I have a chat with a local company soon for a good role. It will not pay anywhere near what I'm on now but will be very local and a good career move.

I would have to downgrade the 340 at some point as monthlies would be too high and so would need to look at a cheaper car.

To keep a decent level of performance it would be a golf r or leon cupra estate type thing.

Just hypothetically would you give up your pride and joy? Obviously everyone's circumstance are different but still interesting.

Yes, I'd get rid of the car if it was needed.
Quite simply put there would be no choice really.

If a job gave me a better quality of life overall, time with my family etc, then the car I drove wouldnt even come into it.

You can get a nice car later, you cant watch your kids grow up, look after your parents forever so choose now what you cant replace later...

Can I ask how it's a good career move if it won't pay anything like the money you are on now, I go to work for the money, no other reason.

If the job the right one at the right time then go for it.

The two cars you mention are not really much of a downgrade...dare I say in some ways they will be better!

No brainer a car come bottom out of my priorities..... especially as we have generic run of the mill production cars!

Some custom classic would make it a harder choice... but would still make the same choice.

For the right job and a solid career move yes. Not for convenience though. As long as you are taking it for the right reasons and it sounds like you are. Then the car probably won't be enjoyed as much anyway. Golf R doesn't sound too bad. What about M140i?

I'd never give up my car for a job. I would just get more women up the duff and claim more benefit.

Careers are about long term progression and the ultimate goal of getting the job you want in the company you want. Short term cash isnt always the right way forward...

It's not just security. As a contractor you rarely benefit from promotional opportunities and the accompanying sense of progression and variety in your work. Not to mention the satisfaction that goes with getting others to do your shitty work for you.

Definitely and will likely need to do in the future.

A car is just an object, things like jobs, housing, better lifestyle are far more important.

The bit I can never get are those at 21-25 etc that buy an expensive car rather than getting or saving for a mortgage.

Hope he is carefully watching IR 35 and ensuring that he cant be deemed to be an employee..

Give me the quality of life, money doesnt buy happiness or replace people who are no longer around who you didnt spend enough time with.

and after a certain point you give way too much to the taxman so its very limited benefit....
