I would rather go for a dry filter so I dont have to worry about over-oiling or just leave it stock as it flows well enough.
honestly speaking, went with the injen intake just for the sound. lol

the material used in the K&N drop in is the same as used in the aftermarket high flow intakes
the K&N may have slightly less overall surface area (MAYBE) than aftermarket cones but I'm fairly certain it is higher flow than stock as even their data shows another plus is the ability to clean and reuse the filter anytime you want as another poster indicated, the difference is only felt when the higher air flows reaches a point where stock filter becomes restrictive whereas K&N is still aflowin |

Just get an Injen intake. Looks good, sounds great, and adds a bit more power.

For the record... I absolutely NEVER said that a drop in filter will provide a noticeable increase in power. Neither will an aftermarket intake system (on our cars anyway). The reason I chose a K&N is because it FLOWS better than paper. This is one hundred percent proven. As a DEFAULT... there is a cost savings over the life of the vehicle.
Also - there are proven oil sampling tests that PROVE that they oil is no dirtier when using this filter as opposed to a paper filter. The oil acts as a tacking agent and actually helps the filter catch MORE dirt than a dry aftermarket filter. Its amazing how ignorant people will twist and turn statements to fit what they want to hear. Like everyone harping on the cost savings point.... YES - I will save approximately $500 over the life of my vehicle but this is not the primary reason that I decided to use this filter. For christ sake, I spend that for a good night out in Tahoe at least once per month. |

I really wish we could keep it civil here.
From everything I have read and researched, a $49 investment in this seems like a decent one. I'm moving forward.

I personally think OEM is just fine... but if I was to replace it I'd go with the afe dry air filter just for the fact it's a dry filter compared to K&N which is oiled which could screw up the sensors...

I get confused with the whole warranty with aftermarket parts thing. I just assume I don't have mine anymore. As for the maintenance plan I have had the techs open my hood and not say a word about my intake and continue to work.

Yeah, it would be nice, but when some people get overly defensive about things they've bought and resort to calling other people "dummies" and "weirdos" for choices about how they spend their money, it's sometimes a slippery slope.
I've still not seen a good answer to why I should care about an air filter that flows "better" when I won't see noticeable power gains as a result. |

I understand all this high tech stuff even though I am a dummy weirdo that dumps the leased daily driver for a new one every 3 years. I do tend to keep work vehicles like trucks & SUV's long term & cars that interest me as bring special, but a DD Nah. That said I believe you are correct that when it gets reduced to name calling the argument is lost by the name caller. EDIT: FWIW I am finishing up building a CAI for the COBRA. The 6" ducting runs from the front lower scoop to the filter housing air box. The filter & housing are stock parts from a 671HP FORD SVT racing engine out of a Shelby GT500. The conical filter has a standard element & is not oiled. BTW Nothing against a CAI system. Built my first one in 1962 for a 409/409 dual 4 barrel Chevy V8. Thing is the BMW's all come with one right from the factory that will deliver over 400 whp so there is no reason to reinvent the wheel unless you are putting out a lot of horsepower. Or just like the sound of an open intake.

Had regular free dealer service, warranty & recall work with FMIC, alloy charge pipe, oil catch can & the BMS tune in disabled mode. Expect if I came in with a blown turbo it would have been out of my pocket.

I have no issues with my car in general , had a TPMS issue but that’s it.
Took car in to dealer for service, no problem with K&N filter. Been using these filters on all my cars for over 20 years. I do not do it for performance gains. I did dyno test on another car of mine and did get 7hp over stock with K&N. Dyno owner said he has seen cars that got negitive results... less hp with K&N. 320i is a great car, but it does need all the help it can get ! I actually get better mileage over stock. I just do road trips in my 320. |
