iPhone connection via USB

When I connect my iPhone 6 to the USB port in the armrest the phone goes into a flash mode where the screen flashes on/off once per second. I thought it was my iPhone 6 so I tried it with an 8 and same thing. Then I thought it may be an aftermarket cable so I switched out to authentic Apple. No improvement. Anyone know what is going on?

Same issue here. Took my 328 into the dealership and they could not replicate the issue. Happens on my iPhone 6 plus and 8. It is extremely annoying, I have hard connect to use my connected drive apps instead of the Bluetooth connection.

Try taking the brightness down on your phone, it might be drawing more current from the USB port than the car is able to deliver.

I just checked my iPhone 6 and the brightness is at about 30 - 35%. I do that to preserve battery life.
Thanks

Problem solved. Although the strange path this took, the dealership figured it out. After replacing the USB port it was discovered that you MUST use an authentic Apple cable. I thought mine was but it was a knockoff that looked identical. I went to the Apple store and bought a new cable and, voila, all is cool!

Good you got it sorted. I personally use Anker cables - solid performance and great customer service. Their new cables come with lifetime warranty!

It's not the cable. The USB port is only rated to power at a certain amperage. I don't remember what it is off-hand but after using a phone plugged into it for an hour or two with nav apps open it will start to draw more than the port is rated for and wonk out.

I confirmed this with a USB multimeter. It's also in the manual that you can't use the USB port for charging because it doesn't have the amperage.

WHAT phone can play music through USB without ALSO charging at the same time? By saying you can't use it for charging, you are also making it impossible to use the device to play music through USB. Dumbest thing I've ever seen in a manual!

BMW should be providing us with a recall for this issue, or should be compensating us for the lack of functionality given that we paid EXTRA for Enhanced USB. Period.
