torn between GT 335 and GC 430

I'm looking at a 335 GT and a 430 Grand Coupe.

Space isn't that big a deal. I like the hatchbackiness of both. I like the lowness of the 430 but the 335 has the silky 6.

I know the 335 will be quicker.....how much difference will I notice in the twisties?

The main reason for the GT is space, in the rear seat and trunk. I would have bought the GC, but I needed the space, so I bought the GT. The secondary reason is AWD as standard, if you live in an area that gets snow. Do you? 'United States' doesn't narrow things down, to say the least. Not much difference in quickness between 335GT and 430GC, because of the added weight of the GT. The GT rides better, the GC handles better.

I had trouble deciding as well, but ultimately I decided I wanted more space. The back seat in the 4 Series GC is pretty tight. Also the price of my used 328 GT was about 10% less than a comparable 428 GC. The GC is definitely a lot better to drive, but when I was looking for a car I was spending 5 days/week commuting in traffic so sporty handling wasn't the most important feature to me.

Thanks for the feedback. That helps.

If this is about speed and "twisties", drop down a series and learn to live with a trunk and fold down seats on a 2 Series....no comparison for those attributes. For the realities of a run to Costco, groceries, luggage, and/or having some adults in back, it is very difficult, if even possible, to beat a 3 GT among competitors. The GC is currently the worst of both worlds....less space for people or cargo than GT, but nowhere near as fun to drive as the 2. The next gen GC is supposedly better on space, while also better dynamically, but I'd pass on this gen for now. See my signature for basis of my comparisons.

There's a huge spectrum between those two ends, and the 4GC is somewhere in the middle. I don't think you can call that "worst of both worlds" in general. It could well be for some who need either end of the spectrum, but for others, it might just be the perfect compromise. Though that said, my head touches the roof in the back seat of a 4GC.

I bet your knees touch the seat in front of you as well. 4GC rear seats are fine for children, but not adults.

Within the context of a good universe of BMW cars vs other brands, the combination of the bulk/weight/sedateness of a larger 4 door sedan without the efficient room/space/capacity of the GT does seem to combine the least enviable characterstics of the 2 and 3 Series range. There may be a good use case for a GC, but even BMW realized (per reports) that the next gen GC needed to improve the interior rear package to compensate for the discontinued GT. That model may make for the truly good compromise! We'll soon find out.

All things being equal I'd venture to guess you'd get a better price on a GT as they're less desirable in the US.

You stated your goals directly and indirectly... " I like the lowness of the 430 but the 335 has the silky 6...I know the 335 will be quicker.....how much difference will I notice in the twisties."

1. Aesthetics - "lowness" 4 series
2. Power - "silky" + "quicker" 335i
3. Handling - "will I notice in the twisties."

So your answer is the 435i Grand Coupe (GC).
It's a little more money but lines up with what you want.
It meets your desire for aesthetics (generally the 4 has a lower roofline and wider track) and power (turbo-6) and handling (slight nod to the 4 as it's a bit sportier than the 3 series) .
