I take lots of Aurora and night pictures and one of my favourite locations for these shots is Duffus Castle, just 3 miles from home. I also shoot aurora pictures at our local West Beach, just a mile from home. The castle provides a much more pictorially pleasing foreground, but the best aurora shots are taken from the beach looking north towards Wick and Orkney.
So here is a shot of Duffus Castle at night and facing north, with an aurora shot taken 2 miles away.
Cheating ?
No, I don't think so, not if you're open and up front about how the image came about.

Well today has been a pretty wet and dismal day until, that is, about half an hour before sunset (15:35 today here).
The sky looked as though it was going to brighten up nicely so I took a walk down to our East Beach to see what sunset would be like.

Here's the first shot I got when I arrived at the footbridge over the River Lossie Estuary -



Then I crossed over the bridge onto the beach to get this next shot about 10 minutes before sunset.
Taken looking east across Spey Bay, with the river estuary on the right and The Moray firth to the left -



Then finally back to the bridge a few minutes after the sun went down to get this shot back across the estuary -
