Courtesy car arrived today. Brand new 19 plate Range Rover Velar D300 R Dynamic!

Not driven it yet but the interior is very nice!

excellent,

I would hope that even with that massive shunt and air bags (unless the dash one went off) it might not be totalled?

I do hope all the family are feeling ok, I'm still not right after my minor shunt back in september!

Don't think the Police are taking any action against the HGV driver.

Other half is ok, just some whiplash strain around his neck.

Find out by Friday whether the Volvo is repairable. My gut reaction is that it is.

Looking at the damage, the HGV must've been braking well before the Volvo (as you'd expect with the height/visibility advantage), looks like barely a tap compared to the possible outcome. Glad everyone came out it unscathed!

No injuries, all the airbags deployed and within seconds a call from Volvo assistance saying we've already sent your position to the emergency services and do you need an ambulance. Prompt recovery from LV insurance.

Luckily the dogs weren't in the boot.

Very lucky all round I think.
First of all, good news everyone's ok - cars can be replaced, people can't!

However, your comment about the dogs did strike a chord with me. The main reason I have an estate is to make it easier to transport our dogs around but the thought has occurred they'd be quite vulnerable in the event of a rear-end shunt and I know for that reason some dog owners have harnesses and prefer to put their dogs on the rear seat instead (with a suitable cover on the seat of course!).

Wondering if I should consider something similar; surely a pair of labs would fit on the back seat in an M4?!

Well not after Volvo reduce the top speed to 112 MPH

I am the same, often travelling on motorways with dog in boot. Was going to get a TransK9 cage as they are crash tested, but think i will just get a less nice daily driver and have her in that car with me. She is also 7 now so jumping in the boot of an SUV isnt going to be something she can do for ever....

Golf GTI and Jag XK8 for weekends it is then...

Well the damage has been assessed. Repairs are being put at £20,000 but they have valued the car at £36,000 so are looking at going ahead with the repair.

The SPA platform has been out since 2015. Their new speed limit isn't even activated on any cars yet- so their original claim still holds.

We have been very happy with our XC90 R-Design. 450 ft/lbs sure is fun!

There "claim" is from 2020. what's going on now doesn't factor.

How are you liking the Velar compared to the XC?

I think the Velar is a D300 R-Dynamic HSE in silver with black alloys and roof.

First thing is that you can tell it's from a class above the Volvo. Build quality and materials used seem a step up from Volvo. Apart from strangely the top of the door card where you might rest your elbow, very hard plastic.

The displays and touch screens are look great and are easy to use. They look stunning at night. During the day all I see are finger prints which would annoy me long term (having said that, the Volvo has the same on it's touchscreen).

The Velar drives very nicely, the ride is very comfortable and you don't feel bumps you do in the Volvo although maybe the Volvo being R-Design contributes to that. It handles well on the country roads as well. It's smaller than the Volvo and certainly feels it when driving.

It's is very, very nice the Velar, and the boot is big enough for 2 big German Shepherds. However it is about £200 a month more than the Volvo and personally I don't think it's that much better.

Oh, and strangely it doesn't have front parking sensors which strikes me as bizarre on a £65k car!

Well we have found out today the XC90 has been declared a write off!

Apparently on a rear end impact, the seats do something to absorb impact and protect your back etc and this has tipped the repair costs over to uneconomical.

So the afternoon was spent going around dealerships..

Now the fun starts, I found out my hire car lasted 7 days after they paid out.
I’m currently driving my toy, which is fun on a weekend isn’t ideal on the school run or going to the shops! Luckerly I work from home otherwise it could get expensive in hire cars!

I was thinking the same - hire car will rarely last more than 14 days beyond decision so it will either have to be a stock car or slightly secondhand...

Q7 if it was my money. Or maybe a Disco 5 as there are bound to be loads of them in stock!

My issue was lumbar support, no approved 30d sdrive f31’s in the uk and none in the system so had to go factory order

I'd be having a look at a Touareg. From experience, last year, Q7 and Disco's both more expensive than XC90. Touareg will be similar to XC90.

After testing Q7 back to back with XC90, the drive is that infinitely better in the Audi. Same engine, same platform in the Touareg, so I would guess the same would apply.

We've been told we've got 4 days of hire car after they formally settle the claim. Going to be a massive problem living in rural Cambridgeshire so it's going to have to be something in stock, ex-demo or pre-reg.

Probably won't be another XC90, short list is XC60, X3 or F-Pace. Long shot is a Toureag, one of the leasing companies has one in stock on a crazy deal. Will depend on the spec.

I've emailed my contact at Park Lane to see what they can do us. Hopefully they will have some X3s in stock.

Going smaller? F Pace is a good option, size wise it's half way between an X3 and a Touareg/XC90. Friend just bought an F Pace and had a nosey round it last week, looks very nice, especially on the 22 inch wheels he specced.

I don't know why, but personally, if I'm going SUV, the bigger the better........I'd be looking at the Touareg. Sure there'd be a few in stock if you went to a dealers instead of direct to leasing companies, same for any of your chosen cars. I've been looking at leasing for next car, and dealers are pretty close on price to the rest with their lease deals.
