Volvo vs HGV

This is the result of 40 tons of HGV going into the back of my other half's XC90.

A1 down to one lane, cars in front of my other half braked suddenly, the XC90's automatic collision avoidance systems kicked in and brought the car to a stop. Unfortunately the HGV behind couldn't stop in time.

No injuries, all the airbags deployed and within seconds a call from Volvo assistance saying we've already sent your position to the emergency services and do you need an ambulance. Prompt recovery from LV insurance.

Luckily the dogs weren't in the boot.

Very lucky all round I think.

Have you got GAP? Suppose if you have the silver lining will be at least you'll get a new car. Not a great situation to be in though, it's awful when it's not your fault.

Jeez!

Glad to hear everyone is ok.

If the auto braking hadn't kicked in do you think you'd have rear ended the car in front?

I wasn't in the car but it does sound like the auto braking did stop the Volvo hitting the car in front.

And yes, full Gap insurance thank god.

Glad everyone is OK, just goes to prove that keeping a proper distance between you and the other vehicle is so vital to road safety.

I spend an awful lot of time on the A1 and managing your distance is vital on that road as people really do seem to be oblivious to the dangers.

I'm not so sure the automatic braking always works well as it removes the ability to manage the vehicle behind if they are too close even if you've got the space in front.

Glad your family are okay. Considering that's an HGV impact, the Volvo seems to have performed excellently.
Now where's that XC60 brochure.....?

Ouch. Glad no one was hurt and that hgv didn't push yours into someone else!
I must admit as much as my v90 is a barge I'm happy for it to transport the family as it is solid with airbags a plenty. Must have been scary though.

I doubt the HGV hit the Volvo at any great speed (thankfully)

This is why I don't like any of the 7 seaters that have seats right in the boot near the rear window. Anyone sitting back there is very vulnerable.

Agree... and they are used as family wagons! Crazy idea, IMO.

Glad to hear that everyone is safe and sound. The photo is a good advert for Volvo rigidity, safety and design

We have a 2017 XC90 T8--same color, someone slid onto us and the car barely had any damage to it. Very well built car.

Glad he's ok & he was lucky to be in a decent size car & without the dogs like you say!!

Got to be one of my worse nightmares, traffic coming to a halt quickly & getting hit from behind. Guessing the lorry was hard on the brakes as it would be a lot worse if he hadn't braked.

Even at low speed you can imagine the inertia the wagon was carrying

Not that much if the Volvo didn't go into the car in front.

Main thing is nobody was seriously hurt. Cars are replaceable....people aren't. Hope it all works out with minimum aggro.

It was low speed, probably around 25mph-ish

Glad nobody was hurt, isn’t there some statistic that nobody has ever died in an XC series car ever? Or was it pub chat?

That was part of their marketing. Apparently no one will ever die in the new SPA platform.

We were sold after seeing the crash tests, especially the rollover one.
