Yep.. Ive driven up to 520 miles on a full tank. Since i drive about 40k miles a year it was the deciding factor why i chose the 328i over the 335 or 340. You just cant get close to this kinda mileage with those straight six's.

When I bought the car, it was a 1.5hr trip back home and drove conservatively and I averaged 38 mpgs. Nowadays I just lead foot it all the time and average 25mpg. I calculate using miles driven by fuel put in. The car aways reads 1-2mpgs high.

My best tank was 41.2 mpg (calculated manually by fuel fill, not trip computer, which is usually optimistic by ~1.7 mpg). I have seen close to 40 several times when I used to drive on non-congested roads in the southwest. My best tank has been 588 miles on a single fill.
Click on my Fuelly link below to browse further if interested. I have over 67k miles tracked on Fuelly.

I'd probably expect a slight decrease but nothing too significant. I think my horrible fuel economy is a direct function of always driving in sport mode and having a somewhat heavy foot. I'm sure I could eek out 30 if I tried, considering I get 25 exercising the worst fuel economy practices possible.

40 is probably very hard to attain, your trip computer is somewhat inaccurate and also very inaccurate if it's reset prior to getting on the highway.
As far as my diesel goes, 40+ is easily achievable, and does not require hypermiling, i drive 80+ and get anywhere from 38-41 depending on the city/hwy mix. If it's mainly city driving i'm usually at 34-36 |

I think the only way I could get that mileage would be coasting in eco mode with a sail and a tail wind going down hill. A have one of those sixes. I can get about 30/31 mpgs going 75-80 on flat highways; I can get a little better on the slower highways (maybe 32/33).

Same year/model as you. My best "real" mpg (calculated by miles per full tank) on highway-only was 39.1 mph. Early on, I had "real" 38.1 mpg, but the trip computer showed 40.8 mpg. I was able to input a factor that more closely correlated the trip with the "real". Overall, am averaging 30.7 mpg for about 70,000 miles.

My Overall average is about 23.1 as I drive mostly around the city. Just drove 523 miles on one tank, and was surprised as the ~40 mpg is a lot higher than bmw's claimed 34 hwy

Your tank is 15.8 gallons. If you used the whole tank to travel 523 miles... (Lets use 15.3 as a realistic estimate of fuel used, considering the fact that is unlikely you literally drained your tank). Your fuel economy for this trip would be about 34 mpg... exactly what BMW said it should be! |

I get infinite miles per gallon in my i3, but I get 17 in my M3. Average that out and I still get infinite miles per gallon!
