Insurance Fun Time

It is that fun time of car insurance renewal roulette. My current car, 340i, is insured with BMW insurance, total cost for one year was £560. So I go online to get a renewal quote, nothing has changed in the past 12 months, they want £763!!!
How can it go up that much, no claims made, just me being a year older.
Any suggestions of where to try for a good deal?

They've definitely put their prices up after a lot after all the good deals people were getting on here last year. However, I suspect it might be an industry wide issue.

My BMW Insurance renewal came through recently at +£120 but it was still much better than I could get elsewhere (and includes BMW repairs and courtesy cars) so I still went with it.

Yup. Blame Covid. The industry is taking a beating elsewhere and are trying to recoup.

I've always found this with insurance and many other similar annual contracts. These companies suck you in on a deal year 1 and then hope you're too lazy to change when they send you an inflated renewal. I've had to change my home and car insurance, gas and electricity and internet every year as they always jack up the prices.
Best one I had was Kwik Fit car insurance which went from £300 in year one to £1,200 in year 2 with zero changes. Cancelled and moved to another for £300 again and when I phoned to cancel they said "oh we could have matched last years price" Why put the renewal at a 300% increase then??

For being loyal customer they will always rip you off. Every year I change insurance company, lats few years it was privilage and direct line same company different name. Shop around and go with cheapest.
Bmw insurance was the cheapest for me this year, over £100 cheaper then next one. When I cancelled with privilege they told me the same crap story "we would mach it", yes when I rang after receiving renewal it was they best price.

Always a huge pain trying to sort out car insurance. I'll spend a good few hours comparing prices.

LV on my first year insurance on the 4 series wanted £1600 which was the best quote I found, then on renewal this year they wanted £1900, that's with no changes.
Went on comparison sites and my cheapest quotes were coming in around £1500.
BMW insurance came out cheapest at £1250.

Was hoping it'd come out cheaper this year as I've got 3 years NCB now, but I guess it's not horrific for a 4 series at 20 years old. Some of the lads I know that live in Birmingham are paying £2500+ just for a 1 series or A class.

Was partially thinking of cancelling the policy as I've really no need to drive the car under lockdown, but then I remembered that I royally cannot be bothered to sort out my insurance again in a couple of months hahaha

What are your best quotes coming in at on price comparison sites such as money supermarket etc?

Esure tried to put mine up last year by 50% for no apparent reason, so I did the usual shopping around online, all the price comparison sites and the ones that aren’t on there separately. Ended up getting it for more or less what I paid the year before.

.
I have just done my first comparison site, Money Supermarket, better than BMW, but still £100 more than last year for the cheapest, that is with the AA.
Will try and get through some of the others tonight.

After many years of competitive renewals with Direct Line Group insurers (mostly with Privilege) I switched to BMW Insurance last year after Privilege refused to budge on their silly, increased renewal quote.

Looks like I might be switching again bearing in mind some of the experiences detailed previously in this thread.

I renewed with BMW insurance at the beginning of March, paid £420 last year on a 2017 335d, this year was £380, I was shocked as I’d had 2 windscreen replacements in the previous 12 months

Your car needs to be insured unless you SORN it as well and probably needs to be insured at all times if on finance.

Do remember that if it spontaneously combusts or a meteor lands on it while SORNed and parked on private land you are f**ked without insurance to cover the costs of someone attempting to T-Cut out the damage.

I'd keep the car insured - just because you not driving it your car still needs to be insured aganist vandalism, theft etc.

Postcode lottery.

Looks like BMW insurance don’t like the OP’s postcode this year if he’s finding cheaper on price comparison sites now.

Ouch. Like you I have a 340i and a Leeds postcode and it's not great is it. The thing that saves me is being an old git

Yeh I'm only 29 so that really doesn't help me! Annoying even saying it'll be in a garage at night which is what I was planning on doing made it shoot up more!

Damn north Leeds!

Try some specialist brokers, I rung a few for mods, all came in cheaper than any online provider (including bmw) quoted for a standard car. At least 1-2 of them covered non-modified cars too, I want to say A-Plan do? Who I'm currently with as are a few members on here.

Bearing in mind that I am in my late 50's my last renewal premium was £830 with the AA, the previous year was £550 with the introductory discount etc, before that I was paying approximately £800 with LV. I did try BMW Insurance but they were only £10 cheaper this time round than the AA so I stayed with them.

I only have myself to blame for driving a 430d convertible with a Group 42E insurance group and the insurance includes for business mileage, guaranteed loan car which makes a difference. My previous 320d convertible was only £500 to insure, so with the bigger engine comes greater running costs.

A-Plan at Thatcham, they are extremely competitive for modded cars and found them good for standard also. But only Thatcham office.

Chris Knott Insurance comes highly recommended.

They will aim to beat any comparable quotation and have a much more personal service than the big corporates.

As a point of reference, I'm paying £507 for a 440i GC, aged 33 with 4 year's NCB.

Find two insurers that give the best price and play them off against each other. I've found this to be the best way to get money off. I had a renewal through from admiral in March and it was hundreds more than my previous term, got a quote off Adrian Flux and they beat it, took the policy out and rand admiral back, they beat AF, rang AF back to cancel new policy and they beat admiral again. I could have kept going but I was happy with the price and couldn't be arsed sitting on the phone any longer.

It is a bit of work and it's frustrating that they cant just give you their absolute lowest price from the start but if you've got the time to sit down and do it you can get them down.
