Remus axle back or cat back exhaust
Hey guys,
I recently bought a 2014 335i m sport and one of the first things i want to do it change the exhaust on it. From what i have read and the price range i want to spend the remus exhaust system ticks the boxes. There is a $1000 difference between the Axle baxk system with quad tips and the cat back system with the quad tips. Not knowing massive amounts about exhausts i was wondering if the cat back system was worth the extra 1k for sound and performance. Im still undecided if i will go a tune in the future so not sure if that will affect my options. I also want to avoid droning so once again not sure if that will affect my options. Anyway guys please let me know thoughts. Thanks in advance. |

Are you planning on going with an upgraded downpipe at any point? I have the Remus sport axleback, dual tips, and a CLDP and it's plenty loud for me. I guess it really comes down to how aggressive of a sound you're looking for. My suggestion would be to start with the axleback, and if you decide it's not quite loud enough, you could always upgrade the midpipe later; rather than going full catback, finding out it's too aggressive for you, and have to swap the stock midpipe back on and have to figure out what to do with the extra midpipe. Just my 2 cents. I don't know how pricing would work out. If it would be way more economical to buy the catback as a whole as opposed to the mid and axleback separately, then maybe that'd be the way to go...but I can't imagine it being that huge of a difference in cost. Either way, excellent choice in going with Remus! =D

Havnt thought to much into a DP yet. I was thinking axle back first as well and if I’m happy with that then just stay with that for now, if that’s not loud enough then buying the mid section

Axleback for refined sound; catback for max volume (may drone if you ever upgrade DP though).

Axleback - nice upgrade, minimal performance gains, modest sound increase
Axleback with Catless DP - Max performance, slightly louder - need a tune to clear code for having no cat. Catback is obnoxiously loud and give you minimal performance. I highly recommend not getting the cutback system, it will make your car vibrate and drone from the noise.

If you are remotely sensitive to a loud exhaust stick with axle back only. The catted downpipe softens up and smooths out the sound but it still increases volume. |

no, this would be a pretty mild/conservative setup.

I added axleback Remus and it was a very small increase in loudness, in my opinion not worth the money. But when I added the catless DP I was very satisfied with the sound. This is my DD car and I drive my wife and kid in it, so I wasn't looking for anything extreme. DP and Axle-back worked perfectly for me.

Furthermore, it's extremely well made, reasonably priced, and retains the electronic Exhaust valve.

Depends on your mods and goals.
If you are doing downpipes, you definitely want to go with axle back only. mild tone, stock downpipe + axle back aggressive deep tone, REMUS catback Aggressive sound with a high pitched tone on high rpm, downpipe + axle back

I'll offer my take from an installer's POV. Recently, I completed an exhaust/catted DP install for a client of mine. Prior, I asked them what was important and proper sound without drone was critical for their needs. After some explanation, my client settled on the MPE and Fabspeed catted DP. Oh the two, the DP install is the most time consuming, with the MPE install being much easier.
I first installed the MPE and let the client fire up the exhaust. The sound/flow was much nicer than the non M-Performance exhaust and very typical to the MPE. Once the Fabspeed CP was installed, my client could not be any happier. Cold start is amazing, then quiets down substantially. For what he paid combined, he gained the sound he wanted, as well as more performance from the DP, all for less than a full cat back system. |

and OP, I myself was originally looking at an axleback system, I just personally don't like that they require cutting/welding of the factory exhaust to install so I'm holding off. I have added a catless DP, and the sound is a bit louder but still very tame. and I don't know about you guys, but it's kind of crazy how much some of these companies are charging for their axleback systems when they are just straight pipes, no muffler or anything just a simple pipe and hanger setup.. I get it, the material, bends, diameter, tips, but some are $800-1000+ when a muffler shop and some exhaust tips will do the same for ~$300
