KE = (1/2)(30 lb)(30 mph)^2 = 900 lb-ft of work performed on your head to slow a 30 lb moving object from 30 mph to zero

Mine’s an ‘18. Assuming it’s the LCI year.

The cover slides over the cupholders.

Also I’m ashamed I can’t recall the equations off hand and my background is physics and I’ve been a crash reconstructionist on the side for 13 years. But my dogs are always harnessed and belted in the backseat. My dogs, like my kids, know what “Hold on” means and will brace themselves. 😂

I have this exact same problem. I solve it by owning a coupe, a convertible and sedan.

Have a 2017 440i hardtop convertible and I really enjoy it. But I'm sorry, as far as I am concerned, the coupe is by far more pleasing to my eye.

Because cold weather. And because cheaper. I honestly find it strange that people buy convertibles over coupes in new england or other short summer areas (unless its a summer only car) or if you are retired empty nester. Convertibles have smaller trunks which are not good for everyday living

Maybe it’s just me,but what are you people putting in your trunks that take up so much space...with the pass thru,I can fit my golf clubs,a small ladder, quite a bit of groceries, couple of bags for a trip...worse comes to worse,I keep the top up and I have tons of room...not sure trunk room is the best argument for not getting a drop top

Good question, hard to think of the things when not at my car but, luggage is one, i had a spare when i was running non-runflats. If you go on a roadtrip you want to have as much space as possible. But roadtrips are fun in a convertible so decisions.

I definitely agree with carrying a spare with non RFT’s and could see how that would shrink the trunk...hadn’t given that too much thought as I am still running run flats...I stand corrected

I've always considered convertibles a bit girly and most of them look funky with the top up....not to mention, more things that can break $$$

thats why

although when its just the wife and I without the kids we will rent one for our Hawaii trips from time to time, but usually put the top up half the time cuz it gets too damn hot in the sun ...lol

Obviously some of us have miss placed preconceptions. How they look with the top up is irrelevant.
This is no different then arguing about driving a motorcycle. It’s personal preference. People riding a motorcycle have more things to break.

If you rent a ‘vert in Hawaii and keep the top up,your insane...it may very well be one of places BMW was thinking about when they designed their convertible...apart from the 15 minutes of rain every day,the weather is unmatched and it is by far and away the most beautiful and visually stunning of all the 50 states...the top would never be up if I lived anywhere in Hawaii...being afraid of a little heat is a bit “Girly”...sorry,had to be said

Units, bro.

Acceleration does not equate to velocity. I didn't do GREAT in physics and it was a LONG time ago, but you gotta figure out what measurement of force you want. Newtons are sort of standard I think and 1 Newton = 1kg*1m/s(squared).

Now I'm gonna take a crack at it, physics majors, feel free to scoff at my feeble attempt!

30lbs is about 13.6kg
30mph is about 13.4m/s

Acceleration from 30mph to...let's say 0 for argument's sake, in say 1 second converts to
13.4 m/s(squared)

So, 13.6kg x 13.4m/s(squared) = 182.24 Newtons of force, which based on the interwebs converts to about 40 pounds of force.

Open to correction.

You know mass, you know velocity, so you know kinetic energy. Your assumption on time (required to stop the mass) is what determines force. We know a 30 lb mass moving at 30 mph has a kinetic energy of 900 lb-ft (which is the amount of work that must be performed to stop the object; and Sportstick's original post used lbs instead of lb-ft to describe this). The problem is that the time required to stop the object (your assumption of 1 second) is also the most important variable in the equation you're solving (a 30 pound object moving at 30 mph wouldn't hurt you that much if it were stopping over a timeframe of 30 minutes) - and there's no correct way to actually determine how quickly a dog will decelerate upon contact with your head - so you can't meaningfully make any conclusions about force or acceleration in this hypothetical situation (only about work and energy). That being said, I have enough information to conclude that I wouldn't want a 30 pound dog traveling at 30 mph hitting the back of my head.
