Just thought Id say hello having joined the ranks. First ever BMW and absolutely loving the my 335dx. Kids have never had so much room in the back its cavernous and Dad gets something resembling a performance car. My last car was only a 1.5 qashqai.
Still playing with all the gadgets on my msport model but car has an annoying knocking sound whenever I go over the smallest bump or tight corner. Seems to be the parcel shlef but try as I might can't stop it. Any suggestions?

Have you taken the shelf pieces out to verify that's where the noise is coming from?

+1, and make sure that the pins are correctly placed behind the rear seat.

It's definitely the shelf. The pins are in the correct position but it doesn't seem like a very tight fit. Might have to try some tape.

The pins shouldn't rattle, being held by spring clips. Make sure all four are seated. I can grab a hold of the panel and try to shake it, but it doesn't move and doesn't rattle.

It's a bit of a mystery. My daughter sat in the back while I was driving and she thinks the shelf is rubbing against the plastic trim on rhe side panels of the car. As the cabin warms the noise stops so I can only think its down to a small amount of expansion/contraction.Will investigate further. Apart from this absolutely love the f34 easily the best car I've owned. Not sure why so many people seem to dislike the shape. I prefer it to the wagon.

I doubt your lows hit -20C. Mine do, regularly, no rattle.

I had the same problem. The metal clips that hold them in place right behind the seats need to be squeezed together. Get some pliers and gently squeeze them a little for a tighter fit. Whats interesting is i even swapped panels from another car at the dealership and a few moths later same thing happened. But once you tighten it should be fine. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips, I'm having the same problem with my F34. I thought it's the clips when the shelf is a little closer to one side or the other (if you don't attach it in the perfect center). Will try the pliers trick! :-)

Silicon dots have also helped ensure the parcel shelf stays centred. Couple of pounds in any hardware store.

A friend has recently purchased an F34 and we've found that the pins that hold the front edge of the front parcel shelf appear to be broken off. I can't seem to find the right parts on bmwfans.info - I would be grateful for any pointers.

I have a 2017 GT with 7000 mi. I had to have a new transmission put in at 6000 mi..they said it was very rare. After that I noticed a rattle every time I would go over a rough spot in the road coming from the back area inside the car. They now have had it in the shop for one week and have really looked hard (I give them an A for effort) but cannot seem to find the culprit. The tech put some kind of BMW stuff on the back seat latches and put in a new soft release on the hatch but still the noise. They have looked at everything inside the car as that is where the noise seems to originate. They know it is not the shelf or seats nor hatch release mechanism.
If they don't find it by tomorrow I will pick up my car.

If it's sitting in the shop they'll never find a rattle, unless it looks like this:



They have to take it out on the road with someone in the back seat to track it down. It might not even be in the cabin. I once spent weeks trying to find a rattle in the front of the car that seemed to be coming from the windshield/dashboard. By pure chance I opened a window while driving and heard it was actually coming from under the hood. It turned out to be a small section of a coil spring had broken off, still wrapped around the strut making noise at every bump in the road.
There's no such thing as coincidence. I bet something wasn't done right when the transmission was replaced and that's the source of the noise.

I had the shelf rattle and figured out how to fix it. I also had something rattling under my seat or back seat. I found out theres an air vent under the seat that has a grill over it but things can fall in there. Ends up my wife dropped lipstick (closed) and it fell in there and was rolling back and forth for months. Foreman figured it out and no more rattles. So check that out.

Two reasons for booth noise I identified and solved:

1. Noisy back parcel shelf (shelf 2 on the photo below)
Noise is best described as clicks/rattles when going over bumps.

Reason: design flaw (two plastic pieces - between shelf 2 and booth frame are in contact)


Solution: Open hatch and unmount only the shelf 2.
While hatch still opened place shelf 2 in the position it would take if it was normally mounted (as after shelf 1). Now if if you press shelf 2 - you will see that there is plastic part below it relies directly on plastick part of booth (close to handles that put back seats down). Buy soft silicone or rubber fenders and place them between these two plastic parts (i glued them on shelf 2 plastic) and problem is gone.

2. Vibrating sound from the booth.
Mostly appearing when car is driven on low RPM (1-1.5), which clearly came from resonance and transmission tunnel.

Reason: low quality plastic of back license plate holder (blame the dealer)

Solution: Replacing the frame for better quality or putting silicone fenders behind license plate fixed the issue.

My 2014 F34 has a creaking noise that I am pretty sure comes in from the rear - have tried holding down the parcel shelf and the keeping the huge expanse of glass on the bootlid pushed out with my hand. The latter I think solved it, but am not too sure. Do you guys think its the boot locking mechanism that responsible? I have tried to look for the little knobs along the trunk lining that someone suggested can be adjusted to make sure the boot makes proper contact and prevents rattling, but was unable to turn the screws on those knobs for adjustment and did not want to try too hard in case they snapped off. Don't know if its my mind playing tricks but occasionally the sound appears to be the type when two glass panels are rubbing or rattling (maybe from the panoramic sun roof?) or even the leather seats creaking against each other or the body (have checked and the rear seats are properly fastened and not loose).

And then to top it off, last week my trunk lid just stopped closing completely. Have to push the button 3-5 times before it closes completely and locks. Wondering if I am going to have to take the car into the service center or am I missing something?

Two symptoms that could be caused by the same problem doesn't seem to be a coincidence. I'd have the dealer check the latch and bumper alignments.
