What was the first Bimmer you drove?

I was 14 years old. My parents went away, and I took my mothers E34 out for a cruise at night no less.

Always loved the button heavy interior and the feel of an aircraft cockpit and the red ambient light at night. Drive about 4 miles to a friends house and back without incident. Luckily I wasn't dumb enough to give anyone a ride.

Returned it safely and didn't tell my parents until I was in my 20's, despite my older sister seeing me driving away from home..she didn't rat me out.

With two children myself now I will be sure to lock the keys up. My 7 yo caught the devious gene from her daddy, but my 3 yo son is definitely the driver of the two. Shes prefers driving a horse.

E90. Just adored the look of the car, the quality feel of the interior from the heavy buttons to thickly padded doors, and the little design attributes that made the car feel uniquely BMW. Steering was nice and stiff, Inline 6 responsive and smooth. The car felt substantial like it was carved from a single block of metal. It was engaging to drive at any speed. I miss it.

Mine was a red 1971 2002 that I bought new. Test drove the 2002 and a Bavarian. I thought I would get in too much trouble in the Bavarian so I bought the 2002.

It was Spring 1978. I got to drive a silver 1977 E21 320i. Just up our gravel driveway about 700 feet. Holy crap, the steering feel; I felt every stone on the driveway surface. I was hooked forever.

Now get to drive a choice of the four I have. Life is good.

1979, used to drive a colleague's E12 528 on business trips. Had it for several years, when my colleague bought a new E28 528i. I often drove the E28, which definitely moved the game on, the E28 was a superb vehicle.

My father had his first BMW, a 2000 'New Class' back in 1972, but I never drove it. Looking back can't really think why.

A relatively new pre-refresh E30 318i. Great car, smooth ride and smooth power delivery. Felt like a luxury VW of the day.

My buddy's '05 Jet black/cinnamon 6spd E46 M3 that he got in '07 as a graduation gift. Such a fun car to drive. Eventually we did headers, exhaust, coilovers, SSR wheels, and a CF CSL trunk.
He regrets selling that car every time I talk to him. Was an absolute blast for a couple of 19yr olds to play with for a few years.

An E24. 1989 635CSI. A friends car, took it on a highway jaunt on a Sunday morning. So happened a Ferrari 360 rolled onto the highway and we had a fun time at higher rates of speed.

After that, a BMW dealership invited me to a drive in support of breast cancer and every model was up for drives. Drove every car in the lineup. My favorite, in 2005, was the Z4M by a country mile.

The original X1, I was stunned how well it steered given the ride height, didn't realise it was the older platform and steering though.

Very first one was when I got stationed in Naples Italy back in 2000. I bought an 86' 520 manual. It was glorious and was the first car I learned to drive stick on. Fell in love with BMW's after that.

2008 328i sedan. My cousin paid me to fly down from Washington and drive it up from San Diego to put it on a barge to Alaska as a gift for her mom. I was really impressed with how it ate up highway miles. Wanted one ever since.

BMW 924 TD

My first Bimmer was a 1986 524TD ... white w/blue interior. This was my first and only new car. It wasn't long after I bought it that someone came along and smashed into it, taking out the whole front end. I can still hear that BMW emblem clinking along the asphalt after it dislodged from the hood. I thought it was a total loss, but this tank of a car was able to be repaired and was put back into service. My understanding is that they only imported them for a couple of years.

My moms E46 325ci and I loved it immediately. It was also my first experience in a German car having only driven Hondas and Nissans. The BMW automatic transmission at the time was a revelation compared to the awful slush boxes in the Japanese cars. The heavier steering feel and overall nimbleness got me hooked.

There used to me such a marked difference in driving feel and performance of the 3 series compared to its competitors. It was truly the ultimate driving machine. Now it seems like the whole segment is full of big numb machines.

Mid 1980's E30 Baur Targa. It had a removable hard top and folding rear window. Felt like a roll cage.

Test drove some new 3-series sedan in early 2000s. Wasn't that impressed mainly because of the interior.
