M performance brakes
Hello everyone,
I want to upgrade my grey standard brakes of my 340i to the m performance brakes, but i have read on other forums that the rotors make noises while cruising. Maybe BMW fixed that issue now, does anyone have installed m performance brakes lately? Thanks |

What's your budget for upgrading the brakes? Do you want to improve visual appearance- larger rotors and calipers - or increase braking power? For daily driving, even standard brakes are fine. |

If price is no object, AP Racing or Brembo will provide great appearance and braking performance with very few equals.
This thread has pictures of AP Racing brakes. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1400921 PS. I prefer AP Racing brakes. They provide literally incredible stopping power. In every day driving conditions, only a small fraction of these brakes capabilities will be utilized. |

You can eliminate both the noisiness of the M-perf brake kit and the issues with excessive dust by using different brake pads. I just had the kit installed this last summer and went with EBC Redstuff ceramic brake pads and I've had zero issues with noise or brake dust. I've been extremely happy with the performance and the looks of the brakes. Even my wife noticed a big difference in the stopping action and power of the upgrade (she never notices stuff like that).
If you know a good indy shop you can have the kit installed for somewhere around $400-$500 (including stainless steel lines). |

Very helpful advice from Larry77. EBC Redstuff brake pads are much better than OEM brake pads.
The decision is entirely yours to select the brakes which meet your requirements. |

I guess it would depend on the price and how good of shape they are in. Yes, you should have them coded to the M-sport brakes. I feel like you would notice a difference and they would definitely look better than the stock grey calipers. Basically they would look like the M-perf brakes except without the slotted rotors.

You can get these installed at any shop that does brakes. It's a very simple install and doesn't need to be done by a bmw dealer.
Same brake pad sensors as stock. Plug and play. The coding is for the ABS. Since the rotors are a bit larger, abs would use a different profile for its event mapping (eg. How fast, long, etc to engage the pistons to prevent locking, blah blah). You'll need ISTA to change this. Don't think it's possible with BimmerCode and a WiFi dongle. In day to day use you won't see any negative behaviors from the brakes without this profile change. In emergency situations, when abs would be engaged, the difference in behavior wouldn't be catastrophic either. You won't be driving the brakes into the range of their maximum abilities anyhow.

Answered your coding question already.
Blue msport calipers can come in two variants. One that is the same as your gray 4pot brembo and a 340mm rotor. This is msport braking on the lower powered engines (x20,x28x x30). On the higher powered cars, like yours, or with the N55 335i, the blue msport is exactly the same as mperformance (yellow, red, orange) with a 370mm rotor. It is the exact same caliper across the board, they just make the integrated caliper carrier of varying lengths. The calipers that can fit around a 370mm rotor are also used in the Fxx M series cars. Those cars can fit a larger 380mm rotor with that same caliper because the upright on those cars had mounting holes 10mm farther out from the axle than on our cars. So the blue 370mm calipers you can buy for our cars is exactly the same part used on the M3 and M4. I believe the m2 uses the blue 340mm in front.

Personally I would not upgrade half of my braking system. I would be worried about uneven braking performance, there is a lot of engineering involved when it comes to how the front and rear perform together. I'm not a mechanic so maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in but that's where my mind goes...

This is the same setup as a 320 with upgraded brakes as the blue calipers on those were 340/345. Yeah it is odd to me in any case for rears to be bigger than the front but thats how they did it. There is the difference in weight between a 340 and 320 with the engines so that may make a difference but there are others who I've seen run the 340/345 setup. I also imagine since the fronts are still 4 pot vs 2 pot in the rear and bigger pads they should still have good clamping power vs the rear.

Since these cars are really really close to 50:50 weight distribution it's safe, and possible, to have some brake bias towards the rear. The f22 x35 and x40 cars are already set this way from factory. Same set up as the upgrade msport for the lower powered N2x and N4x cars mentioned above.
