Do Not Shop At Costco!!!

I bought tires off tire rack and took them to Costco to get them installed but they wouldn’t install them because they were not run flats. I can buy non run flat tires at Costco and have them installed (for 2x the price) but can’t bring newly bought tires in. I guess they want to rape you on the price then give you a reach around on install. I’m not shopping at Costco anymore. They can suck it!!!!

Some places are like that. Probably policy or something. I called a Les Schwab and they told me they wouldn’t mount my new tires on loose wheels because they are not their tires. But I took some other tires to a different Les Schwab and they mounted them even though I bought them elsewhere. Just depends on the shop I guess.

I will be taking them to Discount tires.

No more Costco pizza?

Not uncommon. If they install your tires, but then there is a problem with a tire, who is responsible? Just like a lot of mechanics will not allow the vehicle owner to supply the part.

Why would a company that sells tires want to install tires that were purchased elsewhere? Do you go to a steakhouse and ask them if you can pay them to cook a ribeye you purchased at a butcher?

As said by the person above it’s all about liability.

Besides that, the warranty there exceeds every other retailers and the prices are fair. If they didn’t sell what you want then don’t use them. It’s simple.

Brilliant - so in the end....over the next...oh I don't know 30 or 40 years...you will spend countless thousands of dollars more on items that you could otherwise have paid less for at Costco (yeah that's really showing them who's boss). And all this over what is likely a liability policy that Costco has every right to enforce....and you are in the wrong.

A text book example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Well enjoy your protest of one - I think it's safe to say your post here isn't going to have an impact on....well anyone.

Nothing new, I hear sometimes they'll install loose tires on loose wheels but if they're installing tires on wheels that are already on the car they have to follow everything the factory states.

Bought a set of tires from Costco for a good price but I'm having them installed by my cousin, he's got his own mounting machine.

You want to check with any place that installs tires before hand if they will install tires bought somewhere else.

Most dealerships won't install tires bought elsewhere even if you bought the car from them.

I know that Tire Discounters will install tires bought from Tire Rack. Still a good idea to verify however.

This thread is B.S.

As others have said so far, Costco's policy likely boils down to liability concerns. It's not their fault that you didn't give them a call beforehand.

Costco *always* has one of their tire brands on $70-90 discount, and they rotate through each brand monthly. You can get a pretty solid deal on the tires that you want if you time your purchase right, then have them installed for $1 each. Their mechanics do good work, too.

With Costco, I'm pretty sure it comes down to how knowledgeable YOU seem when asking for the work. I've had two of my local Costcos put on non OE size tires that I purchased elsewhere on my BMW, and also put tires on loose wheels for my BMW. I know exactly what I'm asking for and able to explain it clearly with confidence.

It will vary from store to store. One will say no and the next will say yes.

One Costco gave me the runaround about this too. I just went to a different location and they were fine. Depends on who you talk to but yes if you want to take advantage of the $15/tire mounting and balancing then they would prefer you purchase your tires through them.

Costco told me they wouldn’t sell or mount non-run flats as well. I borrowed a spare tire from a friend during the install. No problems at all.

Not sure why you would take tires bought somewhere else to Costco to install anyways. They don’t have Hunter Road Force balancers and Costco prices being cheaper plus free road hazard is kinda the point of doing tire business with them anyways.

Our local Costcos(around 10 within 20 miles radius) do not install tires brought to them, I always thought that is corporate policies.

I don't understand why you would go to Costco when Tiretack has a whole list of approved installers in the area. What I found is that most of these installers will actually match or beat TR price as well. One time I bought from TR was because the difference was the road hazard warranty--the last time I needed tires the Firestone dealer gave me road hazard and the install for quite a bit less than TR.

Costco Michelin tires now has $70 off set of 4, plus 1 cent/tire install! But still needs to pay $2.75 fee + $3 TMPS kit per tire.

Honestly though Costco equipment is not that great, no road force.

Instead local Americastire stores now have road force by default $24/tire(including TMPS kit), and they install customer's tires without commotions, and even offer tire insurance on customer's own tires(dependent on tread).

They installed snow go-flats for my 2011 335d. In fact, they installed tires bigger than the spec'd 17" because I was about to get a F30 340i. The tire guys were fine with it once I explained it. No need to sign a waiver or anything.

Haha...good luck with that!!

Next time just use the TR list of verified installers in your area.

Meanwhile I'm gonna keep going to Costco and save 40 cents a gallon on my gas and get my hot dog and soda for $1.99
