Hey everyone,

New bmw owner here and I'm confused regarding aftermarket or oem wheels. I've seen a ton of threads suggesting sticking to oem wheels rather than aftermarket from tirerack. What's the reasoning for this?

Right now I have the stock base rims on my 328i(17"). I have brand new run flats on the car, so i'd like to stick to 17". Is it frowned upon to purchase wheels from tire rack? If so, does aftermarkets effect tpms or any other wheel parts?

I put after market wheels on every BMW I've owned, it's usually lighter than OEM, so better gas mileage and slightly better acceleration. I have the freedom to pick the color and style too, and I never had an issue with after market wheels. As long as you have the winter coat on them to prevent rust. Many people prefer to stay with OEM too, I always sold my OEM rims pretty easily for winter rims. If you get rims, I highly recommend getting 18" or larger, no 17" will look good, it's just too small for bimmers, if you don't want to waste the stock tires, then wait till they're worn out, then get 18 or 19s, you will regret getting 17", that I can promise you. Anyway, I just put these rims on mine yesterday:

I agree that 18" will definitely look better. The only reason I was hesitant was due to the price bmw quoted me for a rim and tire package (4k). This is pretty high, right? I was looking on tire rack and priced wheels and tires around 2.5k. How much should I expect for installation?

OEM pretty much guarantees correct fitment. When I was looking for a winter set, I almost bought them off tirerack. I really didn't want to deal with spacers and whatnot, so I picked up a used OEM set off a 4 series. Didn't have to worry about clearing my brakes, or offset being weird.

Nothing wrong with aftermarket. Just do your research and get the correct specs.

And ditto on going up to 18, or even 19.

Oem has a look that was designed around the car. No aftermarket wheel is like that. Having said that, there are some oem wheels I love. My favorite being the e92 m3 upgraded 220Ms. The f30 needs at least 18s. I'd say 19 is where it looks "aggressive".

Agreed, you just have to do your research and know what you're buying. Every after market wheel set I bought guaranteed OEM fitment, I don't think that's an issue when going after market. I never used spacers or worry about clearance either, you just need to know all the parameters of the wheel you're buying.

Nothing wrong with buying from tirerack... just please shop around for a good prices. A wheels from tire rack could be cheaper somewhere else.

But this question is very vague... ask you can see from other member posts, 18" is always recommended. 17" just to small for our cars.

If it is me I would hold off and then get an 18" or you can get it now and sell your old setup

Just to add OEM wheel just look nice even if you have your car for a long time. Especially the 400m.. it look sharp.

Run your 17 tires to the wear bars then use those for winter tires.
Buy some 18s or 19s.
If you look at the descriptions on Tire Rack, a bunch of their wheels are designed to be used on BMWs. They have offsets that fit with no spacers. And a bunch require NO centering rings and reuse your OEM lugbolts.

I sold my OEM 18s within months of buying my car. Bought a 17" winter setup from tire rack. Then when spring came around, I bought some 19" wheels and tires for summer. aftermarket on the 17s and 19s.

No spacers, no centering rights. aftermarket TPMS works just fine on both winter and summer wheels.

My all black winter setup from tire rack. they sent me defective tpms sensors so I sent them back and bought sensors from discount tire.
These are the Rial X10 wheels in black. I think they come in 18s and silver and gunmetalish finish as well. I wanted black wheels for winter


My current summer setup (19s) chucked the stupid grill colored things and blacked out the chrome grill and wrapped the roof.

Totally agree... I see your in Minnesota so you have real winters. Mount some good snow tires on those and then get some 18" wheels and tires. You can go tirerack or OEM take offs. Also watch the local Craiglist Facebook and Ebay for wheels. The choice is limitless and really changes how your car looks and handles.

Regarding spacers-can someone explain this to me? Why are they a worry for after markets?

+1 OEM 18" 400M wheels not only look great but offer more tire selections vs larger wheels.

Spacers are only needed if the offset is off, say, if you purchase wheels that weren't spec'd for the F30 and the offset is too high, they can look "sunken in" and possibly have clearance issues with suspension and brake components. Spacers push the wheels out to solve that problem. I actually added spacers to my stock OEM setup for a more aggressive stance and I know many other members have done the same. Also, I feel like the wider track width helped with handling in corners.

If you get wheels spec'd for your car, you shouldn't have to worry about needing spacers. There are plenty of threads about wheel sizes and fitment, most of which include photos. Browse around and see what floats your boat.

Don't forget, if you need spacers, you might need extended lugbolts too.

I was hesitant going the aftermarket route but there are a lot of reputable brands out there with proven durability and look way better than OEM wheels, not to mention for a reasonable price. I recently ordered APEX ARC-8 18x8.5 ET38, each wheel is about 18.5lbs as compared to 26lbs of stock 400m 18" wheel, will be cutting a lot of rotational mass. 4k for OEM setup is a lot! You can get a very good setup with nice non-runflat tires for about $2k. Non-runflats will also improve the ride and take care of the noise.
You can reuse the TPMS sensors that you have or get the BERU / HUF sensors that BMW uses for about $150 for a set of 4 from rgsport, in case you use the already existing wheels for winter setup.
