What do you do in an automatic at traffic lights

Hi
I have a new 4 series automatic and I don’t like stop/ start or keeping my foot on the brake. So what do others do at stop lights?

Keep my foot on the brake at lights.
In a long queue that isn't moving I might put it in Park to give my foot a rest.

Knock it into sports, pull the left paddle into manual and 1st and then burn off the loser next to me at the lights.

I always put the car in 'N' and foot on brake/handbrake.

This disengages the gearbox and saves the gearbox wear as in 'D' the car is always trying to move forwards.

Is that sort of wear significant over time? Most of my journeys are through Central London so a lot staet/stop

With the foot on the brake the only thing happening is that the impeller part of the torque converter (the part physically attached to the flywheel) is moving in the fluid, but that's about it. Not exactly going to wear anything out at idle speed!

This is what I do with my MT6, but with AT8 I do as said in post #2.

I think you misunderstand how a torque converter automatic works. It doesn't wear out anything doing this.

I don't think automatics would be nearly as useful if they did wear doing this as this is one of the main benefits.

This. If it's a pain to do so, BimmerCode and a obd connection as I've done and code it to remember the last setting, which is off!

Our current autos have a feature called Neutral Idle Control (NIC), which automatically disengages the drive while stationary and sitting on the footbrake. NIC offloads about 90% of the torque developed at idle, the brake pack used (within the box) is designed for continuous duty.

The fact residual torque is reduced to about 10%, also reduces fuel consumption while stationary with engine running.

You will still feel some drag (or creep) as you release the brake pedal, this is normal, as NIC is automatically engaging drive, ready to move off smoothly.

Does this also function if the handbrake is on? I don't like sitting at the lights holding the pads onto the hot disks so I just pull the handbrake on but leave it in D.

I don't like stop/start and had it coded to default to "off" in my F31.

In traffic what I do depends on how long I think I'm likely to be stationery; only a few seconds I leave in drive and hold on the footbrake, otherwise I put it into either park or neutral and secure with the handbrake. Could just hold in drive on the footbrake but I always think it's slightly inconsiderate to make the person sat behind have to stare at my brake lights for an extended period, especially if it's a dull day or dark!

No, it is designed for normal driving where we stay in Drive and sit on the footbrake. The brake light switch is part of the trigger circuit. So footbrake and/or autohold, on models with E-brakes.

Your discs would never be that hot to worry about with just normally driving even at high road speeds.

Well thanks to all who have added to my post. I’ve been at stop, in D with the handbrake on but it still did not feel the best. My other car an E Class..sorry! has an electric brake, you just push a little bit harder on the foot brake once at stop and it’s in Hold until you touch the peddle. Anyway the 4 is a lovely car to drive, when we can!

I guess it's what we are used to. I have auto hold on my current car, but switched off as I prefer (am used to) being able to allow creep as I wish.

Never put it in neutral (unless being towed). Park if it's a long wait, but I have coded the start stop off and just use the foot brake.

Does the 4 series have Auto Hold?

I've coded start stopp off and sometimes use Auto Hold. Other times its just foot on the brake.
