How Do NBT Plug and Play Emulators Work?

Hi all, I'm looking to do an NBT retrofit, and I understand that I need a plug and play emulator, which is fine. The thing is, I'm fairly technical (a software programmer) and like to understand why I need something and what it's doing, so can anyone point me in the right direction to tell me exactly what the emulator to enable the NBT nav is doing?

By that I mean, I'm aware it's somehow tricking the NBT unit in to thinking that it is still fitted to the car it came from, I currently think the following, correct me if wrong:
  1. The NBT unit has the VIN of the car is came from
  2. The NBT unit has FSC activation codes stored within it to enable certain features, these are tied to the vin on the NBT
  3. The NBT queries the VIN from elsewhere in the car
  4. If the NBT VIN and the "elsewhere" VIN do match, the NBT will not allow the optional features to run

Am I right? The more technical the better
