Potential hail damage?
A ridiculous storm just rolled through my area tonight and dropped off some pea-sized hail. The hail lasted around 5 minutes or so but was falling very hard. Do you think this caused a lot (if any) damage? It is too dark out now to get a good look but from a brief check with a flashlight it looked OK. Curious to hear others take on this.
Thanks! |

Pea-sized hail usually does not cause paint damage, usually takes larger size hail to chip paint and put dents in hoods, roofs, etc. Lots of hail storms in western Canada so seen a fair amount of hail damage over the years.

That size hail is not capable of causing damage. You’re fine. If hail like that caused damage everyone in the state of Texas would have never ending hail damage.

About a year ago we had it hail on the car when we traveled through Missouri. The size was closer to about a size of chickpeas. Felt like it was going to break the windshield. Thankfully, not one ding. Our cars are really well made, I think you'd have to get to a small ball size before it starts leaving dents.

Man, I feel your panic...
My heart sinks every time I see hail on the radar. But you should be fine, it generally takes quarter size hail or larger to do any real damage. Insect splats probably cause more damage than those will.

You had some low intensity shot peening over the paint.

Not likely any damage, when you check, but make sure your car is dry. Rain beading on your car can hide dents. But like everyone is saying, that size is call sleet and won't damage your car.

Thanks for the great feedback everyone! I went out and checked in the daylight here and there doesn't look to be any damage. Hail in any capacity is pretty rare in the DC area and this caught me off guard. Kinda had a feeling it wouldn't be a problem but wanted to get other's take on their experiences with it anyway.

No need to be worried about that. Typically even grape sized are fine (just keep in mind when driving you are potentially are increasing the impact velocity).
We got this last summer which was 100% devastating: https://www.washingtonpost.com/weath...ry-hail-storm/ 2" hailstones just DESTROYED cars. |
