Oh, I misunderstood the question. My B58 2 series has the grid beside the radiator and box inside the filter housing (again, it comes up with hot and cold packages on the the vin lookup). One of the early thread pics by Toxik show a grid on the non-filter side that confused me, or is that just from an N55 with the air box on that side?
Going back to an earlier question of the extra fabric rectangle on the filter... why would it be needed if it's sucking air from the engine bay? |

I am totally confused about what you are saying now All B58s have the same intake... 2-series included (to the best of my knowledge, since my new-old valved intake box comes from M240i).
Toxik's photo is indeed mirrored... this grid is typically on the other side, where the air intake and filter also are. And it was you who gave a very trustworthy theory about what the extra filter is for! Double personality disorder?

I think I just need another coffee.. I thought the previous messages mentioned some air boxes without the extra internal box but that doesn't look to be the case. It was referring to the intake piping going to the side of the grille area.
But that internal box looks to be a pressure relief valve so it wouldn't make sense to serve as an emissions filter unless it was covering the entire filter. |

I think that theory is the only feasible and likely one so far!

Skyhigh Gotcha! it would be marginally cheaper to make a car without the valve (picking random number of $1 savings.). Build 1/2 million cars, you saved $0.5M |

From my experience bugs end up being pulled into that part of the filter (where the airflow drafts into the box). Saves plugging the filter fins with insects (my K&N has a ton in that area)

I ain't got a valve in my airbox and my vehicle is equipped with both Cold-Climate and Hot-Climate. Did not come with a fleece lined air filter either.

But also not an open intake with a grid behind the grill, right? (Blanking cover only)
