340i Selling Advice

Hi all. Thinking of selling my beloved 2017 340i Touring (I'm doing too many miles so I might switch to electric). It's a lovely car in Tanzanite Blue with 70K miles. Wondering what I might realistically get for it? Online buy-back site are really low prices. Thanks.

The market is difficult currently; prices are dropping...

What have the likes of WBAC and Motorway offered?

Generally that with a few £k on top is about right for a private sale...

The markets been hit hard... You could advertise late teens and see how it goes... eBay 30 day classified is only £20; free on Car & Classic, AT is expensive but can be very good for cars like these

What price are you ideally after/thinking?

The comment I quoted really made me chuckle.

They don't know the specifics of your car so no one can price it like that. They don't know spec, service history etc which can have a significant impact on a BMW value. He's stuck his finger in the air and got £21k.

The market dropped alot in Q4 of last year by circa 20% and is rebounding slightly (2-5%) at the minute but it always does in the run up to March and will plateau again afterwards.

If you are getting circa £14.5k then theh could be offering average money I don't know without capping it. Drop your reg for me and I'll check.

There are only 3 other estates on AT so it's a niche car clearly and are up at serious money. You've then got to find someone with
21 bags in cash that's prepared to buy privately with no redress.

As a few others have said the spec, colour combination and service history will all influence the price to an extent. Tanzanite is a lovely colour, if it has a contrast interior (not black) then this could broaden it's appeal.

Also as danb1979 has suggested, a sensible rule of thumb for private sale pricing is WeBuyAnycar or Motorway + circa 2-3k.

Adding the BMW Insured warranty at Comprehensive level (if you don't already have it) could help sell privately as it's fully transferable.

Although as it's over 70k mies it will be more expensive to do than if it was under 60k miles. You could always opt for the higher excess of £250 to lower the cost, it's still significant peace of mind. When I sold my wife's F30 we transferred the warranty and the buyer said it was a huge factor in them choosing our car.

If it's not currently covered by warranty you can get a quote here (it will definitely help you sell privately). https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/insured-warranty

You will easily get £18k+ on that I think, and that's without knowing the spec. The market has plummeted over the last few months but I keep an eye on 340i F31s on AT. Worst case I'd advertise at 19,995, best case 21,995, depending on how soon you'd like to sell. In saying that, even advertising it at the lower of those two prices might take a while to shift it because the market is unfortunately slow. If you're in no rush go for the higher price and leave it at that for 2 weeks, then take it from there. Let us know the spec as that can have a big effect on it's desirability/value.

Just checked, that's a great spec.
(FYI:Tanzanite blue, Head up display, Reverse camera, Panoramic roof, Adaptive chassis, High beam assist, Nav Pro, 19” alloys, Split folding seats, Black grill, window surrounds, Heated seats)

Recognise the shots so I know the place you bought it from in Horsham. That spec is great, I'm not advertising that for less than 22,995, I might even try it at 23,995.

If you look at AT for comprables; the cheapest 340i tourings, have 90k+ miles and are asking close to £20k. Therefore £21k would be good for a quick smooth private sale.

Spec looks decent too and should command a decent premium for these. Only 13 for sale on AT. Could advertise at £2X and see where it lands.

There you go matted101

Get it listed

Get decent pics of every angle; each wheel, interior front & rear; load space and engine bay and I reckon that won't hang around too long...

Tough market but Parkers guide price is £17k private good. So £18k ought to be achievable.

I regularly get value updates on mine from Motorway, which make similar depressing reading (2018 330i Shadow Edition Touring, bought May last year).

Firstly F31's are worth more than the saloons not only because they are more versitile and look far better than the saloon, but they are rarer too, so a bit of a niche market IMO.

Sale prices for these varies considerably but for 2016 models onwards there are non on Autotrader for less than 21K (as of today) and some lower mileage 2016's priced up to near 28K. In fairness a well looked after 70K mileage car is a better option to me than a 20k mileage 6 year old that's only been stop/started and shunted around short journeys.

I do think that these cars tend to dictate their own price depending on Spec, history, number of owners and overall condition, as there are not many for sale and the newer M340i's are not a contender as you'll be well over £30k for anything half decent and be paying horrendous road tax too!

I have experience from when I sold my 340i F31 although I appreciate that was 9 months ago and understand that the market has changed, but I was offered £4K over WBAC price from a BMW dealer with 72K miles on a 2017 plate, that was after some negotiation and intimating I would pull out of a deal with an X5 (which I did in the end). His logic in this was that he could sell it 10 times over as they are so few and far between and knew that he could price it accordingly because of this. I eventually sold privately for a little over that. I'm not saying what the sale price was as the new owner is on the forum and that just wouldn't be the right thing to do but it was still less than some advertised on AT.

Given the spec of your car as noted above in Markos ZimZimma post, together with the assumption that it is in as good a condition as my old F31 with a similar history etc., if it were me I would pitch it at £22,750 and be in no rush to sell. Some won't agree but hey it's just IMO. You can always come down in price but can't go up .... and Tanzanite blue...

Given my post above, my comments were based on assumptions and how my car was when I sold it, having now seen the add I would suggest that the OP have the wheels refurbed as they are seriously bad and identify what the 'age related' marks and scratches are with some closer photos to give potential buyers a better idea of the cost to rectify. Some interior shots would also help in the add.

I would now say that IMO the asking price is a little ambitious as the car stands.

Great result if thats the one WBAC or Motorway had suggested was worth £14.5K!

Goes to show that it's worth the effort selling privately if you can deal with the potential hassle factor.
