Strange nosie from my engine bay!
Hey,
My 2014 EWG N55 F30 335i XDrive is making this weird noise. The noise would only happen right after the car goes thru it's cold start process after noting being driven for a long period of time when the car is completely cold, then when the car reaches it's normal operating temperature the noise goes away completely. I have no check engine light, no codes, car drives perfectly fine, only that noise right after the loud cold start is finished. I included a dropbox link of a video below so you guys could hear the sound. Have anyone of you guys experienced this issue before, or even have an idea what could it be by watching the video? When you click the dropbox link it would direct you to the video. You don't need to download the dropbox app just choose the option "or continue to website" then press play. https://www.dropbox.com/s/x4f0ecgz49...%20PM.mp4?dl=0 My mods are: BM3 stage 2+ E30 OTS Flex fuel Multi Map/ with map switching/ anti-lag. Did you scan the car to see if there were any code stored? There are some opinions out there that BM3 doesn't show the engine light sometimes.
Does the sound increase when the RPM increase? Almost sounds like a pulley issue. Can you locate where the sound comes from? Maybe use a stethoscope of a long screwdriver where you put the handle touching your ear. Probe several areas to locate the noise. If you suspect belt/pulley. Remove the belt and start the car, see if the sounds is gone. Or see if any pulley is seized / hard to turn. I don't know what a bad HPFP sounds like if there is any sound.

PCV valve noise on the valve cover?
You can hear the noise in this video, sounds similar: You can try to replace the valve or to change the whole valve cover once properly diagnosed.

Valve cover and gasket was recently replaced, the PCV valve gives a whistling sound, my sound totally different. I had that issue before.

Use a stethoscope and find out if it's coming from the intake manifold or something else. It could be any number of things. Kinda sounds like a worn out evap solenoid. The fact that it's only on start up is interesting. That might be indicative of a wastegate issue. Pinpoint exactly what part of the engine the noise is coming from

Try listening near the evap purge valve or wastegate like i suggested. On cold start the wastegate opens fully (which is why its so loud) so it could be a rattling wastegate which is something you'll want to look into fixing as you'll start to have performance issues. The purge valve also has a solenoid in it that moves up and down very fast and when it starts to go it can making a similar pinging sound. Not sure exactly what the duty cycle of the purge valve is but having it active on cold start makes sense, and it also usually kicks on during idle.

I use a 5' section of 1"d flexible electrical conduit as a stethoscope. It's thick and stiff so is controllable and insulates against extraneous sounds...and can get anywhere on the car. Careful around moving things, of course!
Let us know what you find!

That sounds like the HPFP. I could be wrong though.

Also, OP...it sounds like you've got a good guess with the sound, but I saw you mention BM3...and if you have it, I believe I read that you can't read codes when it's on. Maybe confirm that...as you might have codes waiting to be read but blocked.
Bygones if I'm wrong--devotedly stock, but vaguely recall that...and believe someone confirmed it too.
