Windshield Replacement W/ HUD

I recently cracked my windshield on my 2013 335i sedan and i just got a quote for $800 because of the heads up display, safelight said $500 (still a bit expensive compared to average $200 replacements) but what does the windshield with HUD have thats different from any regular windshield?

It has a special coating on it that allows the HUD to work without creating double images.

It has a film to reflect the HUD image, but you can do other no-name for a lot less that works fine. My local glass shop uses XYTG and it's been flawless, and 1/2 the price as safelight.

If you don't get the HUD version, you get a weird double image from the HUD.

Whatever you do, don't settle for Fuyao glass for the windshield. Pilkington or bust or your HUD will have a double image and look horrible. Ask me how I know.

Your quote isn't bad. I got it replaced for $1200 through insurance, the shop got the windshield from a BMW dealership.

Compared to $700+ from mobile service repairmen, i was amazed they gave me a quote that low

I had similar thoughts. That was a great price for a windshield for a car with HUD and I'm assuming also has the rain sensors since its a 335.

I wonder how much location factors into the prices as well. This past summer we had to replace the windshield in my wife's Highlander. We got quotes from several places to include Safelite in our local area and prices were anywhere from $400~$700. Safelite was around $450. While visiting family in another state we heard they were paying much less so we called the local Safelite installer and got a quote of $300, for the EXACT same glass. No brainer. The windshield was replaced by a mobile installer while we visited with family. Best of both worlds.

I just looked at my records. StateFarm paid $1400 for my windshield. HUD, LDW, Etc. comprehensive with no deductible.

These prices are nuts. I got my HUD-compatible windshield replaced last year for $500 by a mobile installer. He has excellent ratings online so I went with his recommendation for the HUD and he did a wonderful job. No issues whatsoever.

Windshields are safety equipment.

HUD problems aside, using bottom barrel copy parts is a false economy considering the risks of it not performing to specification beyond the minimum DOT standard.

I paid $1600 for OEM windshield including the sensor replaced on my F30, according to the shop they will not reuse the old one. I wouldn't settle for none OEM windshield.

Was this for OEM glass? If it was, this might help validate my regional price theory. OEM glass for a vehicle with rain sensors and a HUD will easily run four-figures in my area. A normal, midsized, SUV windshield like I mentioned before can run upwards of $700 for aftermarket glass!

I realize the windshield is a safety item and it needs to be as optically clear/distortion free as possible, but I'm not convinced BMW OEM glass is the best option if it needs to be replaced.

I've now owned two BMW's and found the glass to be really soft and chips easily. I had to replace my E46 windshield after about three years due to a stone strike. It was heavily pitted and chipped. The after market glass I had installed was far better and showed little/no pitting after five years when I sold the car. My F30 isn't much different. The windshield is in terrible shape for a car that's only four years old.

I don't have HUD, but recently had SafeLite replace my windshield with a Fuyao. The installer took pride in his work and did an excellent job (I'm super OCD).

Not OEM. It was aftermarket, but highly recommended by the installer. It has held up very well....even took a pebble hit on the highway that left only a minor scuff at the spot.

Might also be a great time to clean the HUD area if you’re there when the windshield is off. Very easy access when theres no windshield in the way. I’ve noticed dust and other debris can get down in that area and it’s hard to reach because of the windshield. Just need to be extremely careful and don’t use anything that would scratch that delicate HUD reflective film.

Safelite replaced my windshield with an OEM unit. They said it was because I have the HUD. The bill was $1,030 but it only cost me $50 as I had the mechanical breakdown insurance with GEICO. I drove it to the Safelite shop, figuring it would be cleaner there and they could deal with any issues that arose. I also had to get my state inspection replaced at a local garage. I had no problems.

There's absolutely no reason whatsoever to use oem glass unless you want the logo on the corner. BMW doesn't manufacture their own glass. Sekurit has manufactured glass for BMW in the past, and the factory glass in my f30 is Fuyao.
