Steering is sticking/binding when turning right.

Just noticed this today. If I'm going over 25 mph and turn hard right, about half turn and I can feel it briefly sticking in one specific point and then it goes back to normal for the rest of the turn. No noises, I can turn past it but for that one part of the turn it feels like sticking. It's kinda hard to explain. Steering components/wheels are stock. Car is 2014 335i xDrive with 43k miles.

Any ideas?

Finally had a chance to bring the car to the dealership for repairs (all covered by warranty). They checked for failed parts but couldn't find anything, but they did find some 'electrical codes' and had the car 'reprogrammed'.

None of my coding was gone when I picked up the car, so I'm guessing they only flash the module responsible for the steering. (Whatever that is)

Here's some info from the invoice:

CAUSE: Horn operation, steering wheel permanent malfunction 0000556
Performing vehicle test 50776
3213905 start-up, electrical steering gear (EPS)

Fault code 480128 482394 5d1a53 stored. no related sibs. performed test plan. performed start up procedure for eps. found that procedure was successful.

Problem solved, no more binding/sticking. Going back to FBO ASAP and installing Dinan Shockware software. =D

4lss, has this issue come back for you? Or has the programming worked?

I’m getting the exact same problem you had and I can’t find any other information online. I had some fault codes and one matched yours. I cleared the codes, unplugged my battery, and unplugged my jb4, but the issue is still present.

I’m going to take my car to the dealership Thursday but I’m hoping I can bring them some of this reference info. If the fix still works for you, would you mind PM’ing me your service invoice?

Thanks!

I took mine to the dealership yesterday and they told me it'd be $120 to diagnose and $180 to reprogram. And the diagnosis fee will not go towards to repair. So I took the chance of just doing the programming and unfortunately my problem is still present.

I didn't think it was a mechanical issue since it is only present at a particular speed, but I guess I'll start digging into the steering system more now.

any update on this issue? Have a '15 435i that recently began randomly having this steering catch issue. Alignment was done about two weeks ago during regular maintenance check. No issues were found by the mechanics, and the issue itself comes and goes randomly.

After a new rack and alignment my steering is still catching about every 5 degrees or so both directions between 10 and 2 on the wheel. I feel it most around 20-30 mph.

I recently drove a 2020 330 loaner car, and several times during steep interstate on-ramp curves the steering locked into place. I had to manually return the wheel to center.
Felt so strange and frankly, very dangerous. I passed this along to the service department when I picked my car up.
Never heard the diagnosis...

Mine catches like crazy while turning, and will remain caught until I yank it over the catch point, at which point the car over-corrects in the opposite direction. Brought the car in multiple times, and of course the techs said everything felt normal. These guys are either mentally enfeebled, or too lazy to even test drive the car. New control arms going on Monday; fingers crossed.

The problem i've had with mine is less than 10 mph. Its more often when im backing into a spot. Also today I had the pleasure of getting the ABS brake message "brake moderately" pop up twice on the media display. Looks like a dealership visit in the near future..

Update: upper and lower control arms replaced up front. Vastly improved general looseness of steering, but did not correct the notch/catching when turning the wheel.

Update on the abs message and steering wheel catch: Had the techs take it in for the day while the wife drove around a new x3 as a loaner. Looks like we might be adding another bmw to the family..

The techs pulled the kahu or whatever the anti-theft thing is that came with the car off of the battery terminal. the cable connecting it to the post came loose which was causing the car to receive an overvoltage signal when it bounced around on the crummy roads. Since that was removed and the cable tightened no more messages or catching has occurred.

Can you explain "catching"?

Prior to removing the kahu deal, occasionally when I would turn the wheel at low speed (such as parking or pulling out of a parking spot) the steering wheel would essentially lockup for a split second. When released it it would stop the catching and continue turning. It also only happened when it was raining.
So the assumption is the kahu causing the overvoltage was making the electronic steering skip a beat.
It also occasionally made the bluetooth connection pause my music for a second.
Car has so many electronics, too smart for its own good.

I have noticed my car hits a "stop" when turning right at about 25 mph. This is only on a pretty tight turn, like if you were autocrossing it would mess you up bad. Left turns have no issue, only rights. If you ease up a bit then re-turn to the right quickly it will go past the sticking point. I am on ACS springs and the issue is present with stock or my aftermarket wheels. Not sure if that matters though. There is no audible noise, just the wheel hits a stop and has to be eased back then pass the stop. Not present at low speeds like 10 and under. Something is funky when the suspension is loaded up. Will be replacing my control arms for worn bushings sometime and most likely put on some coilovers this Spring and hoping that resolves it.

[QUOTE=giannizkl;28119183]Is there any solution till today friends?[/QUOTE

Found this on another post

Problem fixed. Ended up being the horrible fitting VRSF CP. The portion of the lower steering linkage is square shaped. When I would make right hand turns the engine must have been slightly shifting and the of corner of the square shaped linkage would make contact with the CP.

I had to remove and re-adjust the CP and it seems to have maybe .5mm clearance now. It was pretty easy to diagnose once the CP was off because the corner ends of the linkage rubbed a quarter sized aluminum bare spot where it was making contact. Had I put the diagnosing on the back burner, I'm pretty sure it would have rubbed a hole into the CP in a couple weeks time. Oddly enough, I never heard a rubbing sound when listening for it.

Went for a 10-20 minute test drive with a bunch of slow right hand turns and it didn't do it a single time.

Not sure if I got a bad CP from VRSF or what but I've had nothing but problems with it since day one:

- Caused a boost leak from the beginning
- Tightened meth bung tightened clamps / checked upper and lower O-rings
- Checked TMAP O-Ring
- Did a boost leak test and found leaks at the TMAP and meth bung
- Meth bung stripped when I tried to remove it to add some Teflon. So that's worthless now.
- No matter how snug or tight I make the TMAP bolts, air still escapes during a boost leak test at about 8-10 psi.
- Fitment is god awful and the upper C clip is clocked in the wrong position. Should be facing up at 12 o clock and mine faces at like the 3 o clock position.

I've been in contact with Tiago for about a week now so I hope he is willing to rectify or at least attempt to replace the upper CP pipe with one that isn't all wanky.
