isn't the 4 series wider and longer?

Yes. I went from a 3 to a 4 and the only difference I notice, beside liking my 4 a whole lot more, is I have the sport seats in the 4 which certainly "hug" you more and you sit lower. I'm not sure if all 4's come with sport seats or just the M Sports. I'm over 6' and find the 4 much the same in the front in terms of space. It may feel smaller due to the sloping roofline and small rear window.

If you look at the specs the waist area of the 4 is slightly smaller than the 3. The 4 has the lowest profile than all BMW's and is wider.

The 4 also has a sloping roofline, which is part of what gives it a sleeker look. If I could fit the 435i that's what I would have gotten. The M6 Gran Coupe is my favorite.

The 4 having a sloping roofline by definition makes the backseat headroom smaller. The front leg room is 42.2in for the 4 and 42in for the 3. Every inch counts for someone well over 6 feet.

I test drove both the 340i and 435i. It was night and day in terms of waist room and the specs verify this.

"Night and day" Seriously? Your numbers don't really defend your argument, but, if you can tell the difference in the interior width, you are much more sensitive to minimal differences than I am. Yes, the back seat is smaller, but I assume you don't drive your vehicle from the back seat. You were clearly talking about the front seat. All I'm saying is I'm 6'-2" and other than what I've noted in my previous post, I certainly can not detect any difference, certainly not in the width. From BMW's site:

Front Shoulder Room
3 series 55.1 in
4 series 54.8 in

Front Leg Room
3 series 42 in
4 series 42.2 in

Front Head Room
3 series 40.3 in
4 series 39.8 in

You have a nice looking 3 anyway.

I appreciate the feedback. I wasn't talking about the head, shoulder or front leg room as a deal breaker, I was taking about the waist or hip room. When I said night and day, if one sits in a car and feels like their breathing is constricted, that can expressed as night and day. The 4 is slightly smaller even without the sport seats hugging ones waist and most people over 6 feet simply will have a tough time in the backseat (headroom/legroom.) The 4 has that beautiful sloping roofline but in comparison to a traditional saloon i.e 3 series, all the reviews I saw and then after test driving, the 3 was more functional for me i.e waist/hip room. Either way both the 3 and 4 are great cars. M6 for the win though.

You're probably comparing sports seats vs non sports seats...

No, they both had sport seats.

You know you can adjust the side bolsters on the seats too, right?

What makes you think I don't know this information?

Because both the 3 and 4 series use the same seats up front, and if you weren't referring to the cockpit dimensions, were comparing sport seats to sport seats, then the side bolsters was the last logical thing I could think of for why you'd feel that your hip and waist felt more constrained in a 4 over a 3.

Although, now going back and re-reading all the posts back up to what bluemark had responded with, and your responses, I'm assuming you're talking about front seats and not back seats, since you haven't said anything to the contrary when responding to my last two posts.

Can't speak for the 1/2, but front seats are the same in 3/4.
