Always on/hard wired dashcams risk of theft.
Following Ozzies post of the cam catching the little shites what is everyone's opinion on dashcams etc that are always in the car getting nicked themselves.
As I dont have one my mind is still thinking of satnavs where obviously if they were left in the car good chance they would get nicked. I guess as the dash cams are so small now and can be mounted by the wing mirror they are discrete so less likely to get stolen? My inclination would be to take them out of sight when not in the car but obviously that defeats the object of using them to catch parking prangs etc. cheers |

Got BlackVue in both our cars and was worried about then getting nicked.
Luckily they're quite discreet esp as I used a sharpie to black out the names and turn off the parking led. Also positioned as much as possible of the body behind the shaded area of the front screen. Rear camera not an issue as I've got privacy glass The cheaper ones are bulkier and easier to spot but cheap

As Kals post above.
Was slightly concerned about my Blackvues getting nicked, but not as much as having stuff happen to the car! Double edged sword really, but as he said, if you turn off the lights etc, you certainly cant see my front one until your up against the windscreen, sits right behind the rear view mirror. My rear cam is impossible to see due to the blackd out rear window.

I have the BMW one. It doesn't get more obvious than that. If there was an award for worlds biggest dash cam. I used some black electrician tape and cut to cover part of the silver lens housing so it is not so obvious.
I guess with anything on display there is a risk of theft. Some dash cams are wifi compatible and some even offer cloud recording. So it would depend on the scum taking chances... whether they would rather not. |

I don't worry about it. Capturing parking incidents is worth far more than the unit itself.
My Thinkware unit has been in the car for more than a year with no theft attempts.

If its not hardwired and well hidden then why take the risk?
In fact why leave anything of value to attract the magpies Most opportunist sumbags wouldnt think twice if they saw it Neighbours car got screwed for some loose change on the seat How much for a new widow and it would usually happen when its raining causing more damage to your precious car |

This is the beginning, as more cars are getting them fitted it's just a matter of time before the theft trend starts on these dashcams.

but then the more people that get them installed, the more chance of another dash cam capturing a theft on another car

It shows how desperate some folk are, a fairly decent dash cam can be bought for around £100 whats a second hand nicked one worth without the cables? It's the expense of repairing your car and the inconvenience, my wife's CD player got nicked out of her car when we were on holiday, cost a small fortune for something that was worth about £20 to them at most. You do wonder if folk will try to pinch these to try to get incriminating evidence against them. Like those kids who jumped on the car in the video in the other thread, after doing the damage could of easily smashed a window and grabbed the camera but were probably scared the alarm went off.

I have the BlackVue cam. It's pretty discreet and you switch any LEDs indicating operation off. If you have a hotspot, it can upload to the cloud. Good chance *if* someone was to nick it, they'd be caught approaching the car.
That said, I have more expensive sunglasses in the car....and insurance. |

I want to use my iPhone to tether my blackvue (cloud) while I am driving around etc. I can get the blackvue to work on my home Wi-fi but not my phone any ideas what I am doing wrong? Wi-fi to iPhone works fine, but I have set up the iPhone hotspot in the cloud settings etc but doesn’t seem to work? |

I have heard that the locall scumbags are now looking for dash cams to nick.
Used to be car stereo''s until they were integrated, then sat nav's until they were integrated, now it is dash cams. Maybe dash cam's will start being fitted at manufacturer. |

I have a thinkware, front cam is stuck right at the top, next to the mirror so hardly noticable.... rear cam with privacy cant be seen apart from the blue record light.
More chance of getting it bumped in a car park, costing thousands then getting the car broken into and a £400 cam nicked. Last edited by aquazi; 03-31-2018 at 02:46 AM.. |

I’ve had the Transcend DrivePro left in my car for years. I can’t see a point in stealing them, half the ones in cars are cheapo 20-30 quid Amazon jobs like this:
