Don't you just love dealers...

For official servicing I take my car back to the dealer that sold it to me as an AUC. They know that car, and me, and have never asked any questions when it comes to warranty work. We both know why I tell them not to software update the car, for example.

Is the friendly nod and a wink worth the hassle though ?

When the EGR recall was announced I got straight on the case. The EGR was one of those included in the recall notice, it was inspected and cleaned but diagnosed as not requiring replacement. Obviously I pushed for it to be replaced as, because it was in the production range for the recall, it could still fail.

When I collected the car after its service yesterday (which included investigating a small of exhaust fumes in the engine bay) I was told that the EGR corrugated pipe has a crack and needs to be replaced. "Don't worry sir, your insured warranty will cover it. You'll just have to pay the excess.".
"No, it's covered by the recall isn't it ?"
"No sir, the recall was only to replace EGRs that were leaking coolant. Oh, and because yours has already been inspected you've 'used up' the recall entitlement."
"But that means now I have to pay the warranty excess, when you could have replaced the EGR a year ago when you inspected it."
"BMW may make a good will gesture. The parts are still on extended back order, but you can drive the car as it's not leaking coolant."

I guess we'll see how that plays out.

Time to settle the bill. £337 for an oil change, oil filter, replacement fuel filter and the BMW "Standard Scope". Standard Scope is the interrogation of the ECUs to check for fault codes, and a vehicle inspection.

I was quoted £249 and showed the service agent the notes that I'd scanned to my phone after I'd rung around several dealers. They honoured the price.

The final part was to check the service log in the iDrive. Of course, they hadn't updated the vehicle inspection record.

"We can't update that because you didn't pay for a vehicle inspection."
"It's included in the Standard Scope."
"No that's been changed by BMW - it's not included."
"Look at the information on the BMW service web page."
"Hmm, that's odd." (I'm right).
"Did you perform the Standard Scope inspections ?"
"No."
"But it was agreed as part of the service that was booked and I've just paid for them."
"Hmm..."
"And you emailed me a link to the video of the technician carrying out the vehicle inspection."
"Hmm."
"So you'll carry out the Standard Scope and update the iDrive when the car comes back for the new EGR."
"OK"

Bunch of clowns, the lot of them.

Same thing happened to me regarding the egr. Charged my wife £250 and the rest was paid by goodwill. Phoned service manager as soon as she arrived home and told them I shouldn’t be paying for it as it was under a recall. Tried to say it was the pipe leading to egr that was faulty and that wasn’t covered.

Told them I was going to take it further. Received a phone call the next morning offering a full refund.

I find this the problem with all dealers/ german cars i have owned now.

Audi/ BMW and Merc make decent cars (in my eyes) but the service/ dealer network are appalling - will try to fleece you where ever they can.. once you buy the car dont care anymore.... as its then someone else (as in their own service and after care) problem.

Apparently the corrugated pipe attached to the EGR has a hairline crack on mine. As it's a very common fault (bad design), and the EGR is one of the affected units covered by the recall, I'll be pushing to have BMW cover the full cost of replacement.

Patridge of Hampshire were great with my car, took my car in for the recall and identified the cooler needed to be replaced. Thankfully had the part in stock and were able to replace it on the same day. Didn't wash the car as instructed. Only downside, I was looking forward to the elusive courtesy car roulette... was given a Mini Cooper D because I was only 19, unfortunately not old enough to be insured on the bigger cars that you guys seem to get haha.
Now that my service pack has run out I'll be taking the car to a local BMW specialist for any servicing needs.

Whats a courtesy car?

I booked my old 335d in for an oil change with 6 weeks notice and was told none were available

Coincidentally went to the same dealer this week to buy a MINI JCW for the missus and got blanked so will be doing the dirty with Berry Heathrow despite it being a 7h round trip

Dealers - love em
