I've got 600 miles out of a tank from the 335D Touring doing all motorways and staying under the legal limit. Unfortunately, 40i petrol owners are in denial about most things diesel, especially the difference in economy and the fact that, in most normal driving conditions, the 335DX is quicker (lights the blue touchpaper)

435d managed 592 miles with 40 miles remaining.... obc av went as high as 59mpg at one point! Car had under 5k miles on the clock and the temp was under 10 degrees.
Was over 2 days down to the south coast for a conf and back.... av speed was 56mph. |

I once did Norwich - York - Bristol - Norwich (660 miles) on a single tank in a 320d.
It was only just as I was down to the last 10 miles range as I pulled into my drive. This route uses the A47 and A17 where lorries, caravans, tractors and cabbage transporters keep you restricted to 50mph. It was the dullest drive ever.

Equally, however, I don't think there's a huge gulf between the two in terms of fuel consumption either; the diesel is certainly more frugal but those who think there's a difference of 10mpg plus are dreaming IMO.... |

My observation, a remap helps economy if you can pull higher gears for more of the driving. |

There are extra consumption penalties (body types aside) to the 335d, both the bi-turbo and xDrive costs fuel. |

Over the last 8.5k in my f31 330d I’m averaging 45mpg, best out of a tank is 590miles on 18” nokian wra4’s
My old e87 118d would do an easy 710miles to its 51litres, worst was 320 to a tank |

To expand on my experience between the two: More than 90% of all my motoring is commuting round the South West Section of the M25. Due to the increasing number of cameras and the fact that the journey time is largely unaffected by whether you do 70 mph or a bit more I just set the Limit in the car to 70 now. My shift patterns have changed slightly between from when I had the 335d which means I spend a little less time stuck in traffic - this I reckon probably has a 1-2 mpg impact based on experience. It is much harder to use all the performance of the 440i compared to the 335d. Rear wheel drive is a major factor here. If the 440i had 4wd then I reckon I'd struggle to get much more than 30mpg. |

I am averaging 40mpg 85% motorway driving in my 335d which is shameful I think, very envious of the 340i owners who seem to get this quite easily too ? I am on 8000 miles now ? Assume the mpg will only improve over time ?

Got 450 miles from a tank full mix of motorway and town.
Driving as I like and not overly fussed about economy or hooning it. Just enjoy it.

It's no surprise dervs get more MPG's, 1 litre of diesel has around 10% more energy than 1 litre of petrol. So if the 40i and 35d have identical economy for energy in-energy out, and all other variable were removed the 35d would still go 10% further than the 40i. I do think xdrive has a c10% penalty on economy, so for a motorway cruise i'd expect the 2 cars to be pretty close on range. I really have to drive hard to get under 400 miles to a tank, the 50 mile warning pops up anywhere between 4-500 miles, my best was 626 miles and i put in 55 litres, but that was mostly motorway in a 50mph limit. |
