Catless v Catted DP

Hey guys... So for my car, I want an aggressive tone and I am deciding between an ER catless or catted downpipe. My car is fully stock and the DP would be my first mod. Any suggestions for a more aggressive tone when talking about downpipes?

Want to spend $250 and get all the noise and power > ER catless

Want to spend $1250 and get a little less noise and power than catless, but stay legal > Fabspeed catted

Go catless unless your state has prohibitively strict emission checks. I'm pretty sure FL is good in that regard.

But does the sound on catless sound better than catted? I'm looking for an aggressive tone and can't seem to find videos on YouTube

Yes, a catless downpipe will sound noticeably more aggressive. If you look into the stock downpipe, you can't even see light come through the other side. An aftermarket catted dp uses a high flow cat with fewer, wider cells. You can see light coming through at a certain angle. A catless dp is exactly what it says on the box: an unrestricted pipe thats only job is to move the exhaust gasses from your turbo to the midpipe.

I have the fabspeed catted, it certainly gave better sound over stock, I haven't heard a catless in person. I think in general you have to go to the extreme to make our cars "loud", like removing resonator, getting rid of muffler, but that seems to make a lot of drone. It seems pairing a DP with the MPE is the best option with not making too much drone.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned that a catless DP will cause a CEL. Only certain catted DP's won't cause a CEL, Fabspeed being one of them.

Any flash tune can remove the CEL, but since you mentioned being stock, you need to consider this.

depending on what's behind the downpipe, such as resonator or muffler delete, mid-pipes, aggressive cat/axle back, catless downpipes tend to become a bit raspy. catted will take some edge off the rasp and reduce or eliminate any smell it may have with a slight reduction in flow.

if you're going catless, even though it's just a pipe, i'd still opt for reputable brands such as ER or wagner and avoid those that have had issues with finish and especially fitment.

for catted, fabspeed and cg precision are the best but cg precision seems to have discontinued theirs. ER and Wagner both have 200 cpsi options but still may trigger CEL.

For what it's worth, I have a catted Wagner paired with a MPE and I love the sound. It's noticeably more aggressive than stock but doesn't drone, doesn't smell and I can still drive it early in the morning and not feel like I'm pissing off my neighbors.

I would go with catted if money is not a problem. You will lose about 1 or 2 HP versus the non-catted. It is better for the environment, if you care about that sort of thing.

Just remember loud and aggressive exhaust does not mean a good sounding exhaust. And most catless cars I have ever heard, sound awful.

Sound is subjective.

Catless will make a bigger difference, its louder and more aggressive.

Catted will make a slight difference, but a cleaner tone
