Exclamation Help! Exhaust Mod for 2016 435i Gran Coupe

Hello bimmer fans,

I have a 2016 435i xDrive Gran Coupe and was thinking of getting into modding before I start getting into wraps.

I am hoping that based off of the mighty forum members' experience and analyses that some advice can be given.

We just got a new 530i for comfort and business, so the 435 is basically just for fun and transportation. I'd love to find one of the cheaper options for an exhaust mod that isn't too loud like straight piping, as a law was just passed where I live that fines car owners for over-excessive exhaust mods.

What I'm looking for is basically just for an improved exhilarating feel while driving and some slight head-turning.

Please help me out!

Thank you all very much in advance.
Looking forward to seeing all the suggestions.

Best,

Tallun

A lot of people like to do the PE mod. Plenty of videos on it on YouTube. Doesn't have much drone in the cabin and pretty nice and aggressive sound

Exhaust, wheels and suspension should do the trick.

Does anyone know if there is a cheaper or slightly less aggressive alternative to the Borla S-Type Catback?

If you want less aggressive and just a little more sound just get the MPE. Its a fantastic axelback that will give you a reasonable coast sound and when you give it the full beans it has a nice loud aggressive tone!

Isn’t M performance exhaust really expensive? I heard borla s-type is around $1K. MPE is more expensive ?

i believe the most reasonably priced decent quality axle-back is active autowerke. MPE axle-back is a safe option however many consider it too subdued. axle-back options by AWE or Remus(non-quad) is what i'd get. currently, I like the sound of Remus on youtube vids.

Doesn't your car have the exhaust flap? If so, try and have that modified so that it stays open all the time. It is a simple mod and will cost you about $0.10. Seriously. Look at left rear quarter inside the trunk. Remove hardcover. Find solenoid valve (mounted to rear metal). Disconnect both vacuum tubes and then connect them with a male-male vacuum connection, bypassing solenoid altogether. The vacuum from the engine should then open the valve when you start the car.

What's your budget for a new exhaust?

Was looking to spend around $1K CAD or hopefully less. I did a bit of digging online and noticed that the axlebacks can only be installed by cutting the existing exhaust system and welding it into place. Is this true? If so, it would be difficult when the time to sell the vehicle comes.

This is extremely interesting.

Will it damage the vehicle? Like short-circuit, scratch/dent etc?

Do you know if there are any tutorials here? I wasn't able to find any..

i may be welded if you desire but most just buy a bmw clamp. so you save your oem muffler and swap it back when you sell your car.

Yes you need to cut the pipe to install it, you can use clamp which comes with MPE and it works perfectly, no leak or anything.
I don't think it effects resale value as that's how BMW does it if you take your car to them.

No damage and no error messages. The computer will still be sending the electrical signal to the solenoid to open the flap.

Your car has an exhaust on both sides, right? Is the inside of one of them more black than the other? When you start your car on a cold morning, do you only see "steam" out of one of the pipes? If you answered "yes" to all three questions, your car has the exhaust flap. That flap will normally only open when you are under WOT. It is there to improve the warm-up time for your catalytic converter. The car pollutes more before that converter is warmed up, so BMW installs this flap to improve their pollution footprint, if you will.

As for a tutorial, I think I gave you the Executive Digest version above. It is quite simple. Stick your head in that trunk and look around.

I tried to do this but failed?

This is a photo of my compartment:

I'm not too sure where the vacuum tube is... I've searched online and on the forum everywhere and people seem to be disconnecting the wiring. I tried to unplug the white thing but it's on there real good; my fingers were red and numb after trying to pull it out for 10 minutes.

This is the thing I tried to take out:

Any tips on how to proceed?

I am a huge fan of the Active Autowerke performance exhaust on my 435i.. changed to a deeper tone during normal driving, little bit of burble (now more so with the AA tune as well) and better tone at higher RPMs.
