Not looking for a debate, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, just wish F1 would give the teams more opportunity to catch up if they don't nail the engine formula correct the year they implement new rules. As for the Merc engine, I stand corrected, thought it was new this year. Still wish they were more competitive.

Perhaps we'll see the playing field levelled-up a bit with the budget cap that's being introduced from next year? Having said that, even under the current rules and limits being able to spend a lot of money hasn't been a guarantee of success - witness Ferrari!

Like any company with diverse resources, the bigger ones (MB/ Ferrari) are surely able to hide development costs much better than a smaller team. Might make things even worse? |

Personally I think it's a shame Alonso ended-up in uncompetitive cars - and ultimately out of F1 altogether - because I think he's probably the only driver who's been on a similar level to Hamilton over the last 10 or 12 years. However, he has to take a large share of the responsibility for the mis-management of his moves between teams and ultimately has only himself to blame IMO. After two years away I'm not convinced returning to a Renault team that's more middle of the pack than front of the grid is going end well either. Strikes me as a recipe for Alonso just being frustrated by continued under-performance (as he was at McLaren before he retired) and there's also the memory of Schumacher's return in my mind; it's not always easy to come back and reach the levels you did previously. So only time will tell but I fear this could be another let-down in Alonso's F1 career... |

I don't recall many retired F1 driver maintaining the competitive edge in a second career. Exceptions being Prost (not counting the midway season retirees, like Lauda after his crash) Schumacher, Jones, Mansell, Raikkonen, Kubica, etc didn't live up to their past. |

Prost didn't retire in 1991 though; he was sacked by Ferrari late in the season by which time all the good drives for 1992 were taken. Therefore, rather than have a season in an uncompetitive car, he took a sabbatical as he was confident he'd be able to secure a good drive for 1993 (which he did with Williams). So it wasn't like he'd waved goodbye to F1 in the way Lauda, Schumacher, Raikkonen and Alonso all did - for Prost it was only ever an extended holiday and throughout 1992 I'm sure his mindset would have been one of a current F1 driver even though he wasn't actually racing.

It sounds to me in the article like he just misses the buzz of F1 and wants to be back in it. He was always pretty demanding and unhappy with middle of the pack before. He’s not daft though, and in joining Renault he will know that is most likely where he will be. Yes he’s holding onto hope that they’ll be more competitive in a couple of years, but he’ll know that’s still a long shot.

What a pole from Lewis.
Smashed RedBull at their home by 1.2s in the wet. Very impressive. Enjoyable qualifying in that.

Good qualifying session that one. Really glad it was raining, even though last weeks race was decent enough, you wouldn't just want a repeat. The wet spices it all up.

Can someone explain why last weekend’s incident with Albon/Hamilton was worthy of a penalty, yet today’s insanity by Le Clerc trying to insert his car into a space that wasn’t there was deemed a racing incident?

But looking at that Lewis / Albon incident a few more times, and seeing a number of other attempts at that corner, that was a racing incident. No penalty needed. |
