Where were you up to in life 10 years ago?

Starting this because it’s 10 years to the day that I bought my e90 325i M Sport, fuck finance I bought outright , it wasn’t new but was 12,000 miles and less than 2 years old, I felt like a million dollars in that car driving away from Blackpool BMW.

I was also a couple of years pre kids and went out around 5 times a week, never went to bed before 4am of a weekend, I’m surprised looking back now that I made it through

Times were fun, no BREXIT crap and none of the grounding that kids give you.

We had disposable income, both with good jobs and boy did we party hard, absolutely awesome

Just married, moved to Switzerland, driving a Range Rover and had no children.

Now 10 years married, back in London, driving a 7 series and an i3, and have two children.

2009 - kids 17 and 16. Working for a Dutch company overseeing the new operations they had bought in the UK. Site furthest north Banff. Furthest south east Kent coast. Furthest south west just outside Newquay... three sites on Anglesey... doing mega miles in a Volvo S60. Paying a fortune to insure a Corsa for a 17 year old. Wife first diagnosed as ill.

Not my finest time.

Nice story Bronchy.

I can tell you where we were because we often reminisce about that time.

We were without the two children we have now. We were without the business. We didn't have the detached house, the X5, nice things on our wrists or 500 sobs a night villas in the sun.

But we had just us two, and it was a fucking blast.

We drank most nights. Weekends were a blur of alcohol, kebabs, and one of our favourite memories which was traversing the hangover with bacon sarnies while watching Grand Designs. Every weekend. We fucked like rabbits. We did anything we wanted.

They were brilliant brilliant days.

Age: 10
Would've just started my final year of primary school, an official big kid in year 6. I was probably under a lot of stress considering that I was now facing the task of moving to secondary school the following year
Spent a lot of time watching Top Gear video's and convincing my dad to get an E60 M5 after watching Clarkson's review.

Flightmemory tells me that I was in The Hague for work ten years ago today - which real memory tells me would have been a keel-hauling by a major Dutch bank. Our software failed them again on my flight home, as I found out at the baggage carousel at Birmingham.

Wouldn't meet my now-wife for another five months, having our beautiful daughter wasn't even something I could have imagined back in those days.

There would have been a lot of hard work, too much alcohol at weekends and too little meaning to life generally.

Oh, and I was driving a Toyota Avensis. Dangerously soporific for 4/5am motorway runs.

Had been with the still current Mr, (I’m a friend of Dorothy ) for 13 years, it’s now 23 years. and I’m only 40!

I was driving a Vectra VXR in Arden blue, great car, didn’t like bends.

Still in the trade, selling Vauxhall’s driving a 335dX saloon.

Fall 2009, I was in the last few months of my last college co-op. I spent all my money that summer on a custom 12" subwoofer setup. 3000wrms with a nice touchscreen up front. I finalized the install just in time for cool weather to fall upon us, but I was still motivated to drive with my windows down, blasting my music to show off....

...but it was in a 2002 Chevy Malibu

I had the same feeling as OP when I drove away from the performance center in my 440i. First new car, first BMW, and first time not telling anyone what I was doing until I got home. It was just so satisfying doing it for me and getting exactly what I wanted.

First child was 18 months old, so up to our elbows in shitty nappies and sleep deprived

Living in the same house but preparing to move out ready for the 'big build'.

Employed rather than independent.

Partying and the weekend binges had already pretty much stopped - one of the benefits/consequences (depending on how you look at it) of having a young child.

Oh, and driving a 330d Touring, of course

10 years ago I'd been married for 9 years, no kids, worked in telecoms, had a mortgage, can't remember what car I'd have been driving at that point, but would be something basic.

Today, married for 19 years, still no kids, work for the same company, no mortgage, drive a nicer car.

2009. Married 12 years, we'd by now found out that SWMBO couldn't carry a child to term (5 miscarriages), and had come to terms with it - though after a decidedly rocky patch. We were just looking at buying a farm (both our families are farming background). I'd just taken on a new job with the NHS, moving from the private sector.

Now, we're still there, having spent what feels like a small fortune on getting the place right. I'm still with the NHS, SWMBO has her own business, and we're in the process of starting work on 2 holiday cottages for renting out next summer and onwards.

10 years ago I was driving a Seat Ibiza 1.9tdi FR. Great little car. Punchy and very economical.

I'd been a copper for 18 months.

Civil Partnered for 6 months.

Had an amazing German Shepherd called Bentley.

Lived in a modern 4 bedroom detached house on a large development in St Neots.

Ten years later, now driving a 440i GC, still a copper and still married to Mr TP. Now got 2 German Shepherds and live in a 3 bedroom thatched cottage in the country surrounded by fields.

Age 34. Had been down south for a few years, progressing in marketing having started in sales.

Had a nice 2 bed place in Berkhamsted, and very much enjoying single life!

Had an E46 330d, modified of course, and shitty old MX5 for trackdays.

Still did a lot of climbing and outdoors activities though.

Now, progressed a bit further to Franchise Leader, mortgage on a 4 bed detached house.

Happily married now.

330e and C250d estate for the boring stuff, M4 for the fun stuff.

Most of the outdoors stuff has gone by the wayside and mainly doing various motorsports/track stuff these days.

10 years ago was married and both in good jobs. Had lots of scare cash and plenty of time on my hands. Did what we wanted when we wanted.

Now have 2 kids.

Kids spend most of our money and both working full time, we have very little spare time.

But you know what, with the kids and strong family round me I am better off that I have ever been. Not all about money and what "items" you have.

Almost exactly 10 years ago, just discovering the joys of RWD, especially in snow with summer tyres!

Just had met my future parent in laws. Currently sat in the in laws living room having just watched an episode of Grand Design and contemplating the madness of considering taking on a big build project for our house, whilst waiting for the architect to send me the first draft drawings of the project. You have to love the unpredictability of life .
