Amazon Echo... worthwhile?

I haven't bought a gadget for at least a few weeks...

It sounds quite cool, and clearly no one really needs one, but interested to hear from anyone who has one.

I installed 4 throughout my house in December to complement my hive lights/plugs/heating. I've since got rid of them all as the voice recognition tech is still very clunky and for me, I felt disappointed by the limited functionality.
In today's day and age, I felt that this kind of smart technology still isn't quite there and needs another couple of years until it really comes into its own. Integration with other devices whether they be lights, home entertainment etc is still limited and personally I felt like I was a beta tester for a product I expected much more from.

Much of what we have could fall in to that bracket.

Is that based on your experience of having one though?

I did wonder that. I've not got the rest of that stuff for it to connect with, I was more thinking that we could use to play some music/radio in the kitchen/dining/living area, and my wife uses Audible for books quite a lot and I think it works pretty well with that.

I do sometimes think that starting to use this new technology in the early days can be quite helpful though as you understand and appreciate the updates and expanded functionality better, compared to getting it a few years down the line and sometimes struggling to grasp the range or complexity of what it can do.

Amazon, the worlds biggest shop, analysing every word I say in order to ultimately target me with more sales?

Call me a cynic, but I can turn on the lights the old way

The bit I'm more worried about is the fact that if this system was hacked then any number of nefarious organisations could record everything that was ever said in a house!

Who wants an unregulated device listening to every word you say in the privacy of your own home ?

Not me.

I got one for Christmas and have since integrated it with my home automation software. It works OK, but I am already using it less and less. When watching the TV it keeps piping up and telling me stuff that was mentioned on the TV! Its OK but still needs work.

Make sure you deactivate the "Purchase from Amazon by voice" feature, otherwise you could end up with a surprise or 3.....

When the news aired, 140 other Echo devices in homes heard the report and processed orders too

I have one and use it all the time, mainly for music, as a prime customer 3.99 is nothing for the music, it's a gadget and a very good one at that, I've not had the time to use it for much else apart from the news and the odd joke but at parties it's been a big hit, more so than my new Bose sound system which cost far more.

It provides nothing you need or want. It's a bit like the Apple Watch. Even people who have them can't give a reason for owning one.

Many of life's purchases are things we want, not need.

There are some things it does that I want, but with new technology there is always a point at which it actually works, and getting in before that can be frustrating. Sounds like this is still before that point.

We have three echos, took a bit of training but all seem to work ok, with the odd hiccup. We use them for hue, hive, Netatmo, WeMo, music, radio 4 etc, will be controlling AV once that's all installed.

I think the difference is that we already had a Samsung SmartThings system up and working so Alexa just copied all those profiles and groups across. Many of our lights, switches, sockets etc have been moved over, with associated rules.

We use the SmartThings for all the rules, example, 'if raingauge outside over .2mm last hour and temp below 4c and motion sensor bedroom activated then shower one light blue'. Then know to put cold weather gear on for run. Yes could put head out of window but this is man technology we're talking about. For Alexa we set the rule for 'Alexa what's outside rain and temperature?'.

So in essence Echo for us works as it's part of a bigger system. Looking forward to when it all comes with a better combined interface and com's layer.

You can also use IFTTT for linked commands to other tech.

Yep, we use IFTTT, works for none instant stuff. Anything that means it goes onto the tinter web takes time to respond and some of the call backs to hue can be up to 30 seconds. Hence going with the samsung smarthings, it's basically a local web server with push pull similar to IFTTT but inside your house, firewall etc.
