I'm getting old and want a different vehicle

I'm near 50 years old I think it's time I've moved on to something more comfortable. I currently drive a 2015 m235xi and have been very happy with the car but I'm finding that it's time to move on to something more comfortable. I've owned 15+ cars in my life. Infiniti M56, Nissan 350z, G35, Acura Integra, 3 Honda Sedans, 2 Honda SUV's, GTI, MS3, etc. After going on a road trip with my wifes 2018 VW Tiquan, I decided that it was time to make a change to something easier to get in and out, more comfortable, etc.

I'm not going to get a loan so I need to limit myself to $50k but would be happy to spend less. This is assuming that my m235 will bring at least $20k trade in. Here are a few I've thought about:

Tesla Model Y=Love everything about it except build quality. I don't think I'm ready to deal with the build quality. Also top of my price range. Maybe wait until build quality gets better? How long will that take?

CX-5 Turbo=This would be nice because of the lower price and the tech is getting updated for 2021. The negative is that we would have two similar sized vehicles.

Kia Telluride=This would be hitting the top of my range. Since we have no kids, we'd never need the 3rd row. I like the look and the interior is pretty great for the $$. They're a bitch to find right now so you're not going to get any deals. I've never owned a Korean Vehicle.

CPO=I've went the CPO route quite a few times and have always been happy. The M56 I bought I got for nearly 1/2 the price with only 20k miles. SUV's don't seem to have the huge drop in resale like big luxury sedans. I also want something with good tech in it.

Honda Accord=Haven't driven one in a decade but they've always been good cars. Loaded I could get one for $35k new and drive it to the wheels fall off. With that said, I never "drive it to the wheels fall of". Would I get bored with it?

You are going from a really small car to a small sedan, medium sedan, medium sized SUV or a really large SUV that you will never use the capacity? First thing I would figure out would be the general type of vehicle.

If we had a medium sized SUV I wouldn't buy another. Great thing about them is they can haul large items, how often would it happen for both of you to do it. I would never buy the 16' SUV as it seems like a pain in the neck to transport mostly myself or myself and wife. What's that like to parallel park.

Biggest issue is none of us are you so what we like has nothing to do with your preferences.

I would 1000% CPO if it's a long term keeper, depreciation is absolutely crazy.

Honestly for me it's hard to go past Acura RDX. Reliable, looks OK, practical and equipped nice enough that you don't tire of it after 5 years.

You're in a BMW 235 and you're considering a Kia? What am I missing here?

On a side note, we love our 2015 RDX.

The problem with the DD is that it needs to tick a lot of boxes or you'll get bored with it. If you've got $50K to spend you should consider a daily that does what it needs to do well and a weekend toy.

I cross shopped the RDX and the forums were absolutely full of folks complaining about reliability problems and extreme frustrations with the tech and the problems they were having with not just the implementation but the reliability of the software.

I test drove an A spec and it drove okay...wasn't fast...didn't sound great...visibility was pretty poor.

Overall...it was quite...plain.

Soon as I test drove the M40i it was entirely night and day both in drivability and usability of the tech.

I was surprised how many people in their 50s, 60s and 70s drive an M2: https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1749263

The fact that you want a more comfortable car is fine by itself, I don't think it has any relevancy to your age.

That said, I also own a 2019 Mazda CX-5 turbo (Signature-trim line). Fine car, torquey turbo engine is required and pretty affordable for what you get -- tech (or rather infotainment) needs an update. But with your Tiquan, I also wouldn't want to own two similar cars.

Just wow. Your experience is just the opposite of mine. Our '15 has 80K trouble-free miles on it, and it runs like a monster. In fact, I've never been outrun (going for a gap) on the highway, not even close. I'm always remarking to people about how fast it is, and it's not designed to be a fast car.

Ours is the standard model, 2WD, not an A-Spec.

Maybe he's talking about the new redesign RDX?

This thread is depressing. I’m almost 50 too. I say you should sell the 235 and buy a 1000cc sports bike. Screw getting old.

Could be, all I know is that ours is fast as hell (for a car that isn't meant to be fast).

I turned 50 9 days ago, and there is no way in hell I'd say I'm old, or trade cars because of my age.

dsmclone You gave a budget and a list of candidate vehicles. You mentioned SUVs and Honda several times. How about a Honda SUV?

If that isn’t what you want, can you give more requirements? There are many fun and comfortable vehicles less than $50k.

Along the lines of some of the other replies, 50 ain't old! I bought a one year old CPO M235i when I was 65!

There’s the Tesla model 3. Slightly better build quality than the Y (from what I’m told) and get same tech.

Compact SUV route there’s always the X1, X3

I’ve had too many issues with Honda over the years. I’d rather get a Toyota. RAV 4 or something sporty from them.

50 is the new 30
Some people don’t even get the chance to hit 50. RIP

I am 59, empty nester and divorced a cheating wife 2 years ago. Finally got out of "family" cars and into a 230i. I can't see me ever going to an SUV or large sedan as an only vehicle.

With some aggressive negotiation, you could get a brand new CT5 V series, its a good size, smooth, has some pep and a great ride within your budget.
