Sorry for the double post but I'd wanted you to see that I'd responded to you. They probably fixed it inadvertently when they removed and reaffixed your caliper.

I think I have the same noise. At first I thought I was crazy. However, after further review it's definitely in reverse with the wheel turned.

I just started a new thread and then stumbled on this one. I've had the car for 5 years, about 45k miles. When going in reverse with the wheel turned all the way (right or left), the front end makes a clunking sound with a shifting feel. I'm assuming its a control arm or sway bar bushing issue.

I'm going to get under it this weekend to see if I can figure it out. Pretty sure I know how to identify a failing sway bushing. Just not sure about the CA bushing.

same here...i get a metallic clunk every time i reverse and immediately after pulling away, it s been back to the dealer and an independent specialist, both said it was the pads and also said it was nothing to worry about...? they said it will probably be rectified when the pads get changed.

Rear diff? Quite common. A pin went on mine in the housing and the diff oil was dirty at 60k. This was on an old E92 though. Isolate the sound if you can. Don't settle for what the dealer says.

Everything looks fine under there. I found this searching the web and I'm wondering if this could be it...

Mine isn't a metal sound.

Man I hope not! Plus I only feel it in the front.

Sorry to revive this old thread, my 2016 340 with around 25k miles started doing it, one tech a the dealer said it is normal. I refuse to accept is normal, especially when it never did it before. I would think that if it was normal, it would've done it from the get-go. Any updates on the resolution of this issue? Thanks in advance.

New guy here!

I google searched this issue and came across this thread. Yup, my 235I makes this sort of clunk at full tilt to the left in reverse as soon as I touch the brake pedal. Hopefully it's the pad shifting. If it's a missing caliper bolt that makes me nervous as I only have 7800 miles on the odo...

My 2018 340i does this too. Noticed it more as of lately. Reversed and wheels fully turned left or right. Feels as if the car was shifting gears. With a clunk noise that's not that loud.

I had a clunk when reversing on full lock on my previous car and have it on my current car.

On my previous it seemed to go away when I changed the brake discs, pads and put new wheels and tyres on.

I have this issue too. Has anyone successfully diagnosed and fixed the issue? I thought it was related to the xDrive front diff, but would be interested if happens on 2wd cars too.
I have 30k miles on a 2015 335i xDrive. Still under factory warranty. I'm getting mixed messages about this being a covered issue vs not. Not sure why it wouldn't be covered.
Happens reproducibly when shifting forward / reverse and then braking, like the quoted reply below. Wheels don't need to be turned, happens when they are straight.

QUOTE=Rose33;15067014]I asked the dealer the same question.. something about the control arms or sway bar switching direction from forward to reverse that makes the clunk noise, but I would assume it happens right after putting it into reverse. I often back my car into the driveway and it happens about 50ft after moving backwards. I find it really odd[/QUOTE]

I have the same thing. Car is brand new with 300km's on it. A few years have passed since the start of this thread though with people all having the same issue but not a single post on the result of taking it in to the dealer to be fixed and the result and if it went away...??

I too have these very same symptoms. I usually hear it first thing in the morning when backing out of my driveway onto the street. It almost sounds like the front wheels are slipping. I originally noticed that my sway bar links seemed worn, and replaced those. Still the same. I'm starting to think that it's bad front axle shafts. Any ideas?

Fyi...F31 xdrive with 38k miles.

Ok, I think we should try to narrow this down.
Do we all have the 4 piston brakes?
Does the clonk appear again, when you go from reverse into forward and brake. Because this is the case in my car

X-Drive Yes/No?

Could it be fixed by anyone?

Four Piston Calipers - Yes
Reverse into Forward then brake - no
Xdrive - yes

I only hear or feel this when I’m in reverse with the steering wheel fully turned left or right.

It's certainly more present, when the wheel ist turned. I can hear it better when the wheel is being turned left than right. It can actualy been felt in the steering wheel.

I just had this happen in my 340. Believe it or not it what caused the issue was the strut bolts that were not torqued down to spec 100%. Maybe they barely loosened up to the point that it would cause a clunking noise in both forward and reverse, more noticable in reverse when in would back into my driveway to park. Bring it to the dealer and have them re torque your strut bolts or just do it yourself. I only brought mine in because it's under warranty and I wasn't sure what was causing the noise. After tightening a few things and doing multiple road tests, the strut bolts getting torqued down resolved the issue.

This might make sense. Just to be clear...the strut bolts (#2), or the center nut on the shock(#3)?

That fixed the problem! Just looked up the torque specs. Tightening all the bolts to 56 nm + 90º did it! Thanks!
