iDrive rebooting in sunshine
I have a 4 Series convertible with professional navigation and when I drive with the roof down and the sun is shining [air temp 28C+] the navigation system keeps rebooting.
It happened again on Saturday and after the fifth reboot it had wiped my previous destinations from the navigation menu and my bluetooth connections. I had the same issue last year under similar circumstances, though once the outside temperature cooled I had no further problems. I mentioned the problem when it went in for its annual service and they couldn't find any faults logged. Any ideas as to what the problem is or what I can do to prevent it happening again? |

I have an F30 LCI
Kept doing this last year. My idrive screen would just go blank! Took it to the dealers and they said idrive was overheating. Sorted out with a software update. Made sense really as it would all come back once it had been off for a while. Touch wood not had a problem since. |

The best way of dealing with intermittent faults of this type is to film them as they happen. If it really is caused by hot weather you can imagine how tricky it will be to demonstrate that to a dealer otherwise.
Does the display show NO SIGNAL in red text for a while? |

The system restarts once it has cooled to a set point. Having the air-con on will obviously help that.

Last year. Same in summer but so bad. Five restarts in a mile. Unit replaced under warranty. Air con did help at times. Was annoying as had important call and made me look like an idiot. Managed to call from phone in traffic ie. phone loudspeaker.

I had to do it a while ago with a e93 320 where all of a sudden it'd go from running perfectly, to chugging like it was on 3 cylinders, then it'd conk out, dash light up like a christmas tree, auto-restart, conk out (rinse and repeat for a while), stumble to life, splutter on 3 cylinders for a while, conk out, etc. Turn it off and on and it was all fine like nothing had happened - and even more weirdly, wouldn't register a single fault code! Anyway, chances are unless there's a fault code, the dealer won't know what to do with it anyway, but it's very useful to take a video to show them in such instances, so you can demonstrate there is a problem when "computer says no" |

Hopefully the issues with my iDrive are sorted. Took it to the dealer and apparently BMW issued an update OTA 3 weeks ago, which my iDrive failed to complete.
They've completed the update and have rebooted the system - hopefully it'll work as intended. |

iDrive working again - hurrah. Sat nav destinations recovered - even better.
Spotify & Waze not working on phone - I blame Android 8.0 for that. One step forward, two steps back |

Similar problem
Hi, I'm a noob, and can't seem to figure out how to create a new post, so apologies for piggy backing on this.
I have a similar problem to described here on my 320d ED F30. I went down to London for a few days at the start of July, and within one day the idrive started rebooting every three minutes or so. It's been like that ever since. It was very hot around that time as most will know, and my thoughts are that it has overheated. However, it reboots at precisely 2 minutes 55 seconds, constantly. Reading this post, it may be a software issue. Speaking to BMW, it could be the cooling fan in the unit is faulty. I'm looking for some advice please, do I take a punt and get the software updated, or fork out for diagnostics first if it's unlikely a software issue? Thanks in advance for any replies. Michael |

So how did you guys solve the prob? I noticed that the idrive will reboot when the lcd temp went up to 50 dc. Once I turned the air con on, temp went down to 49 dc, the idrive woke up again.
