2016 340 turbo issue corrected by dealer?

Hi y'all,

I was in for an oil change and told the service advisor to check the turbo as I've read somewhere that there was some cars leaking oil. They checked it, said that the clamp was loose. I hope that takes care of it. Wonder if anybody else had this issue, i'm at almost 17k miles and this bad boy has been baby it.

I think he is talking about the center section clamp. They loosen apparently

I got same issue of turbo oil leak and my turbo was just dead (no air charge)when I was driving on the way home. The attached picture shows the codes I read from jb4.

I put my car back to stock and claimed warranty. The dealer told me I need to replace new turbo. Havnt picked up my car from dealer. Its a 2016 340i MPPSK and only 13000 miles.:

I think Im not the first and wont be the last one who will replace turbo sometime. Very disappointed with the poor quality of my BMW. Just take cares of your turbos guys

How exactly do you "take care of your turbo"?

How exactly would a loose clamp (18328612537) cause turbo oil leaks?

Anyone have access to BMW bulletins on this issue?

Hmmm better keep an eye on this one.. hate to see turbo issues after our warranties run out..

Nearly every early production car (boosted) has issues. Audi/Vw gti’s, cts-v’s and early hellcat blowers didn’t do well neither.
Bmw is not immune to oil leaks, actually the exact opposite. Beemers leak as much as GM products, but they move out and last if properly maintained
Just keep an eye on it and take it in if needed. (Stock obviously)

Anyone have a diagram/pic so I can better locate this hose and keep my eye on it?

It’s not a hose, it’s a center section leak, located by the center clamp.
You would need to raise the vehicle or remove the intake box and use a mirror to look down at the turbski center section. An oil leak would be obvious and stand out

My 340 had a cel within 80miles of purchasing, but being a past Beemer tech I’m used to that kinda drama

Maybe I should go to a M car before warranty ends. There hasnt been any peace time since I got this car. Too many times for warranty claim with dealer and cant imagine to spend $4000+ to replace a turbo without warranty. Just have no confidence with a normal BMW any more.

Thats very sad, most bmw’s are reliable. My e36 still runs like a champ (sold to my neighbor) but beemers have some misses honestly. This is where I took pride in what I did as a tech and addressed every complaint the customer had until satisfied, even if it meant going against my shop foreman.
I strongly advise against owning a boosted Bmw without a warranty.
Having said that, I would also wait for the S58 based m3. I have a feeling that one will be a rocket ship

lol doesnt the M have 2 turbos.. double the trouble
besides I've had ZERO issues w/my 340.. what issues exactly have you seen?
I just checked my turbo clamp and its on secure no play there.. not even sure why it'd be leaking oil there I would expect where the bearings seal is is where the oil would leak

This is part of the invoice.

K CUSTOMER REQ WE CHECK TO SEE IF REPAIR THAT APPLIES TO SIB 111516 APPLIES TO HIS VEHICLE, AND IF A REPAIR IS NEEDED.
CAUSE: LOOSE CLAMP

TURBOCHARGER BAND CLAMP LOOSE FITMENT (W) SIB 11 15 16, CHECKED THE TURBOCHARGER BAND CLAMP, FOUND TO BE LOOSE. TIGHTENED THE TURBOCHARGER BAND CLAMP TO SPECIFICATIONS AND INSPECTED GAP, FOUND TO BE OVER 5MM. NO FURTHER SERVICE IS NEEDED, CLEANED THE RESIDUAL OIL.

I hope they come out with a recall for this so it can be replaced once and for all.

Lol I've had a check engine for my 340 since I got it as well. I had dinan elite installed and nothing but trouble. Its like the car has the hiccups and while driving it will just start studdering or even when Idling it will start shaking and revs will drop a little as if its coughing or something.

Been to the dealer 6 times for this issue now. The last time it went away for almost 1000 miles and now its back. I am just living with it at this point because I'm sick of bringing it to the dealer for them to not know whats wrong.

Just to add some data, here is mine.
2016 340i Msport here.
18,000 miles.

I had cold start drive off hesitation, which lasts for 1 minute or less.
Went in for yearly maintenance and they updated with new ECU program.
Cold start hesitation GONE.

I was also told they were taking care of a "recall", but it was not clear if that was the ECU update or something else.

Other than that odd short duration hesitation, the 340i has been great.
I haven't removed any panels under the engine to see if I have a leak, but no burning oil smell and nothing on the garage floor.

My 2012 335i was also quite reliable.
Both of my F30's have had some dash and trim creaks here and there, which are very temperature sensitive, and frankly shouldn't be there for such a pricey and, in some areas, over engineered automobile.
But as for actual reliability, starting, driving, power, mobility, utility, etc, both have been great.

Do you have any further info on your service invoice on the ECU update?

With your history as a BMW technician, I'm surprised you don't know the difference between "Bimmer and "Beamer/Beemer".
