2016-17 and B58 reliability
Hey guys ! Having my eyes on getting rid of my n55 335 and grabbing s 2016-17 340 xdrive Msport
Any Advice if I should lean more towards one's year or the other ? I wasn't fussing too much about adaptive handling. From what I am learning Toyota is using the b58 in the Supra - that's interesting as why would a brand of bulletproof reliability be stuffing a bmw engine in its new sports car. I found that interesting and wondered how's eneuone liking their 340. When I had one as a loner I loved it , the power and response entirely new level then my 2011 335

My advice is you buy it, I’ve seen nothing to indicate much difference between a ‘16 or ‘17 as far as build quality or reliability is concerned.

I think it s great engine. I'm up to 40,000 now without any issues.
It pulls hard all the way to redline. In my opinion much better than the new s4 and c43 engine right now. Especially with mppsk.

340 and the B58 in general is a great platform. As said, if it weren't i don't think Toyota would use it in the new Supra. I'm at 18k miles and never had a issue so far thank the BMW Lords.

At 13k and no issues in my 2016. I added a Dinan stage 1 tune at 10k miles and really loving it.

I've had a couple one off stumbles at idle while sitting at a long red light. No codes, not really sure what it was. A dirty air filter or cheap 93 makes the idle a bit rough. A clean air filter and the 'top tier' fuel (citgo) idles great.
I've also had some oil blow by onto the intake manifold etc after winding it out a bunch .. added a catch can. Nearing 30k I'm about ready to change the spark plugs and some other maintenance stuff. Eventually I will get the needed flash tune. |

I have 89k on my 2016 340 xi 6SP. I drive it hard and frankly haven't had a single issue with the car at all. I will be adding a DP and a tune in the spring. Then upgrading/refreshing the suspension after that. Having had a tuned N54 and N55, the B58 is just a better ride from my standpoint. A better balance of refinement and power. Plus I am older so refinement is getting the better of me. lol

OP, I'm at 29k and zero issues, other than being down a pint and a half on coolant just before 20k. Car runs strong. JB4 since 1200 miles. I started getting some slight hesitation/stumble at full pedal around 25-26k miles, so I changed the plugs at 28k and it went away.

You’re right, probably is KM’s. These things better not need rod bearings at 100k!

I'm at about 34,500 km (~21,500 mls) on my 2017 440i Coupe. Absolutely no hiccups of any kind so far *knock on wood*
This car has been bulletproof. The B58 has a lot of personality with the MPPSK, it's constantly popping & crackling. The engine always pulls hard, smooth, & linear. In my opinion the 340i/440i with MPPSK is the ultimate daily; sounds better than the equivalent Audi S4, & much more dynamic than a Merc C43. But, I feel like without the MPPSK equipped, the playing field is a lot more even since the F3x is arguably beaten by the other 2 in terms of interior style/appeal. (Inline 6 always wins in my book anyways though ) Seems like the only reoccurring issue people have been having with the B58 is coolant consumption/loss. The following thread is a good read, it has a poll which shows ~50% of owners have noticed a loss. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1324221

I doubt it and I'm sure the Engineers have learned off the older engines.

Plus forged crankshaft and connecting rods. As long as the ringlands and rod bearings hold up, this could be an unusually reliable BMW motor. I'm concerned about VANOS being on the rear of the engine and all the extra cooling electronics (engine heat management module, electric water pump for turbo, etc).
