OT: Are some Headphones worth the price?

Having a read through design news, noticed an article on Beats by Dre.

Admittedly this is likely true for a number of manufactures.

It also matches some of the pricing you see in China for these headsets.

http://www.designnews.com/author.asp...dfpLayout=blog

For those non engineering, manufacturing people a BOM is a Bill of Materials that are required to make the final item.

So next time you feel like spending a load of dosh on head phones, make sure you get quality and not just hot with the public types.

Picked up a pair of £299 beats in the airport last week. Listened to them for a minute on three different tracks.

Absolute shite, my £45 sennheisers beat them in everything apart from design.

Let's be honest

No one thinks beats are the best sounding

They just want it for the image

Probably not.

But Bose noise cancelling are worth their weight in gold ... and they work without a battery (obviously not the noise cancelling bit). My previous top of the range sony's didnt really cancel the noise, were big and didn't work without batteries.

My wife wanted some headphones a while back. So, me being a hifi guy stuck my ore in...
She didn't want anything over the top so we went to HMV and listened to a few between £20-£150. The best sounding were a Sony pair at about £40... Better than Skull Candy, Dr Dre or even Bose. These were all too bass heavy and lacking in detail. The Sony ones were neutral.

These always rate highly in consumer mags, whether hi-if specialist or generic. Don't think. I have ever read a negative word about them.

Or check out the Oppo PM-1's for something special:

I have a pair of these. Top headphones and great on flights. Can get one for £180 or thereabouts on Amazon Italy/Spain - just return to Amazon UK if problems arise

Just seen your post and these are the ones I've been looking for.

I wanted some new headphones but wasn't entirely sure which. After reading the vast number of positive reviews on these I couldn't resist.

Just bought a pair. Thanks!

Fan of British Tech also, admittedly I bought some Sennheiser and Bose recently (for the plane) but would love a pair of Bowers and Wilkins Headphones, the P7's aren't too expensive, those Atomic Floyds look excellent but I can't seem to get on with the in ear type

Definitely won't regret it!

Fold for convenience as well, so good on flights. Noise cancelling is excellent and runs off one small battery.
