Rust on brake calipers and rotor
So my auto broker sold me a CPO M Sport 435i for a killer deal but the only issue was it did accumulate rust on the rear rotors and brake calipers while being at the dealership...anyone have any clue on how to get rid of it? I'm probably gonna swap out the rotors when its time for new brake pads anyways but my calipers are what I'm more concerned about...listed below are some pictures

I would put on jack stands, take off the wheel, then hit it with some chemical guys diablo wheel gel and agitate with a detail brush. Never seen it get that bad though, wonder if dealership will replace considering CPO and possibly unsafe amount of rust that close to break pads and components.

Maybe I'll try calling the dealership it came from and see what they say about it...

I wouldn't.
http://www.autogeek.net/carpro-iron-x-cleaner.html "Note: Iron X should not be used on bare metal parts, brake calipers, wheel balancing weights, or SMART paint repairs. Mask off these areas. Avoid letting Iron X dry on any surface." Just use a wire brush to remove loose rust and then paint silver or black with rust paint using a small paint brush. I've done it before on several occasions. Problem solved. http://www.waxforum.com/showpost.php...8&postcount=16 Last edited by mineral_f30; 03-28-2017 at 12:34 PM.. Reason: Added link I found |

Must've been kept outside in the rain and snow to get that bad. There isn't anything on the actual contact surface which indicates it was being driven regularly. Just need to get it clean and check for any corrosion to the brake lines and calipers that may need attention. Maybe something from chemical guys. The dealer should clean it if you haven't taken delivery yet.

Or do it yourself. Mine looked about like that on my last car, but it was seven years old. I pulled the rotors and calipers, cleaned them up with a wire brush, painted the hubs and calipers with caliper paint.
Having learned that lesson I put this on my new car's hubs and rotors, so far no rust. https://www.amazon.com/Wipe-New-WW6P...+dust+defender It works very well on the wheels too. |

The BMW center cap is also upside down on the last photo. The M should always be opposite the letters BMW, so they need to fix that and the rust issue and get it recertified. Isn't rust coverage for the life of the vehicle?

I don't recall you mentioning the year and I could be wrong because M-sport has so many options now....but those look like standard calipers and not M sport calipers?

It's possible M sport calipers weren't on some models, or it could just be the rims are m sport.

Thinking of just going in and painting the calipers either black blue or silver, what do you guys think?

Yes paint the calipers. I did and am totally happy with it. I'll post pics later tonight. I used G2 caliper paint found on Amazon. One kit easily painted 3 coats on each caliper and I had some left over. It's actually epoxy and not paint so it withstands heat and abrasion much better. Also, and this might sound odd, but being a brush on application made it much easier. No need to mask off and worry about overspray. You also build up a nice thick layer and its high gloss. You just need to be very patient and take your time. It's also easier if you are able to jack stand your entire car and have all four wheels off at the same time. That will make all the difference. Since it is epoxy and not paint, it cures from chemical reaction and not evaporation of solvents. From time of mixing to cure is about 4 hours then it's too thick to brush on and is pretty much curing. So in all plan a weekend when you can lift the car, spend a good time cleaning the calipers. Then brush on one caliper at a time and by the time you finish the fourth caliper (15-20 minutes) the first caliper has cured enough for the second coat, and so on. Then don't drive for at least 8 hours. i would recommend at least 3 coats there is enough for 4. I'll post pics later, it totally worth the effort.

Some of the earlier M Sport cars didn't even come with SAT, how is that M Sport LOL? An M Sport car should always have paddles and the nicer steering wheel. There are folks on here who upgraded the steering wheel and coded SAT, and it should be possible to upgrade the calipers, not sure if the only difference is that they're blue with the M Logo, but let us know how it turns out once you do it.

Oh gotcha! Wow I didn't know that, I'm glad mine came with paddle shifters. Now that I think about it, my '13 M Sport 328i did not come with paddle shifters, but it did have everything else (steering wheel, body kit, etc.). How strange.

I've attached images hopefully they come through. Never posted pics before. First pic is all four wheels off and on jack stands. You can see I removed the BMW labeled spring clips and clear coated them with VHT high temp clear. Last pic is the leftover I created a gag since its epoxy and cures solid.
