Clicked on this link but didn’t want to sign up to view more details. So the best outcome of this is that anyone who has paid to have the chains/guides replaced would be fully reimbursed, regardless if it was done at a dealer or indy shop? Would the warranty be extended for more mileage and maybe years as well? Or will they have the balls to change it from a warranty to a recall so everyone who has a n20/26 manufactured before 03/2015 will get the work done at N/C?

Also I’m wondering the owners who have selected to purchase a remanufactured engine either through the dealer or indy shop or on their own, will they be fully reimbursed as well? I really hope this gets changed to a recall and owners are reimbursed. I got lucky and would want others to benefit as well.

Is there any way to get the repair done before the whirring sound starts?

Is he N26 as likely to fail as the N20?

I had a 2013 N26 328i and around 30k miles before I traded it in it had the symptoms so to answer your question yes. As far as repairs before ‘sounds’ it would depend on the dealer/SA. I dealt with the assistant service manager at my dealer and he approved the work. If your dealer declines, try another one.

Is that true for all BMW models that came with N20/N26? I mean did they fix the timing chain issue for good on these engines after 02/01/15?

Alright, we should see a settlement in FEB!

From the telephone conference today, 2/3/20 will be the settlement date. Should be interesting to see. I am going to call the court to see if this is a public hearing. Knew it wouldn't make it to a Jury trial!

Full docket text for document 58:
TEXT ORDER: The Court will hold an In-Person Settlement Conference on 2/3/20 at 11am in Courtroom 4D. All persons, including trial counsel and clients with settlement authority, must be present. Parties are also required to submit a five (5) page confidential settlement memorandum to chambers via email to CLW_Orders@njd.uscourts.gov at least five (5) business days prior to conference. So Ordered by Magistrate Judge Cathy L. Waldor on 12/12/19. (tjg, )

Thanks for the update. Let’s hope they extend the warranty for the life of the car or just fix before they break. I am taking mine in one last time in February to have it looked at so this info helps a lot!!!!

I'm at 128k on my 2013 F30 328i N26. Original chain and guides. I'm not really worried about it breaking in the motor. But worried enough that there should be a recall on the chain and guides for peace of mind.

Glad to hear that it will be resolved soon. My warranty is expiring January 2, 2020. Took it in to the dealer and they won't fix it/said all is fine. Volkswagen/Audi had a Timing Chain problem for cars made between 2008-2014, and a class action resulted in 10year/100,000mile warranty and tiered coverage for blown motors. But hopefully this will end with a better result such as a recall.

Is there anything I can do at this point? I tried contacting the Law Firm but they did not respond.

Try another dealer. What you can do is wait and see what the outcome will be. A recall will put everyone at ease. A longer warranty (for example, 10 year/125k mile) would be great but every n20/n26 owner who’s motor was built before 03/2015 will be wondering when their TC/guides will break. Wondering if they do a recall, will they also increase the year/miles to be eligible or will it be all n20/n26’s regardless of miles?

ECS Tuning and FCP Euro sell kits but not sure if their kits include the VCG and the OPG (oil pan gasket).

IMHO no - because the plastic used can be white/yellow/cream colored upon observation. Many people are convinced the new improved stuff is white, but honestly a ton of BMW timing chain guides/plastic were white (except for the old old brown stuff) and it all turns yellow/cream when exposed to oil and heat. So, in short, no.

Exclamation Could this noise be the timing chain?

I have a 2014 328i Xdrive. 77,000 miles on it and it just randomly started to haw this awful noise. I immediately stopped driving it and I’m taking into my mechanic tomorrow but any insight you guys have would be greatly appreciated. I’m worried sick right now.

Wow that sounds bad. I wouldn’t even start it again until it’s in a shop.

Keep us posted.

Any ideas what it could be? I have an extended warranty that covers the entire motor but I’m just wondering what the heck it could be?

Open the oil fill cap and check timing chain for play or broken timing chain guides? Rod bearings? Doesn't sound very good for sure. Oil change intervals?

I'd wager to guess its the TC slapping the guides since its not perfectly rythmic with the engine. do not drive it anymore than you absolutely have to.

General rule of thumb, any N20/26. Do not get with miles closest to 70k. That's where most of them fail at. I'm at 127k and going with same chain and guides. I'm also starting to hear that the new chain and guides (although much rare) a report of an x3 believe had the new chain and guides fail at like 35k I believe.

Be glad you have a warranty so no need to worry. As for the noise, doesn’t sound good but as everyone has mentioned, get back to us after your mechanic looks at it. If the engine is in need of replacing, see if your mechanic can score a 2016 N20 to avoid any issues.

I would not drive this and just tow to a mechanic. Hopefully your engine is salvageable.
I'm getting uneasy with my wife car, a 320 MY2014.
