New 340i Owner

Hi all,

New member on the forum here coming from Audi land. Had a B8 S4 for a few years but have recently purchased a 2017 340i 6MT from a member on here - thanks Charles (CJ421). It is Mineral Grey over Coral Red with all available options (M-sport, Tech package, etc.) I am very pleased with the car so far and I love the way it drives. I have already done a few small exterior mods as well as some coding with BimmerCode.

Apologies if this has been addressed already, but I am planning on going BM3 stage 1 at some point. Do people recommend changing the charge pipe/any other hardware for stage 1? The car has a Dinan exhaust on it as its only performance mod so far.

Thank you for the help in advance and I am excited to be part of the BMW community!

for 340i, no hardware needed for stage 1
Minimum hfc dp needed for stage 2

Congrats! on the new car! 6MT ftw!

CJ421 did a couple great write ups on this car + comparison to his E90 or E92....

I'm sure you've got well maintained machine, enjoy it!

Fantastic choice: Mineral Grey + Coral Red. Congratulations!

More power is always helpful. Improving suspension behavior will provide even more satisfaction. Lots of options are available, depending on the budget.

Welcome to the superior German brand I was actually cross-shopping between an S4 and 335i. How are you liking the BMW platform so far as compared to Audi? What do you like and dislike about both cars?

Thank you! For me, I can tell that this is a much more dynamic package and platform than the S4. The biggest difference I noticed almost immediately was how sharp and planted the turn-in of the 340i is. The S4 felt so much more nose heavy and prone to understeer. While it was certainly not bad, it's just not in the same league as this.

Another thing I've noticed dynamically is that the throttle response is also nearly identical to the supercharged S4 despite the fact that it's turbocharged.

I had a lot of fun with the S4 and will miss it it dearly - but I'm thankful I'm getting to experience another great platform in the F30 as well.

Congrats on the car! I have a 2016 myself and you're gonna love and Bm3 really livens it up a lot ! I'm no expert on this stuff but I believe the charge pipe is not required but my friends who are mechanics at bmw shops have told me even stock they recommend upgrading the charge pipe because it is one of the more common failures on the b58 even without a tune because it's plastic. So I did mine and i would say you can probably get by without it but the piece of mind that it won't leave me on the side of the road for the 200$ was worth it. Install isn't terrible to do either. Hope this helps and congrats on the car love the spec!

Congrats man. Love the sound of the Dinan exhaust. Sounds great.
Have you gotten used to the auto rev when downshifting?

Thank you! This was my first real experience with an auto-blip manual and I always used to think it was a bit unnecessary. However, it only took around 5 minutes for me to fall in love and I now completely understand the hype. I do wish there was an easier way to turn if off than having to turn traction off but otherwise it's fantastic.

I mention a few points in my first post but in essence it's a more dynamic package. It feels more balanced and is way less nose-heavy than the S4. Throttle response is nearly identical despite the differences in forced induction between the two. If I had to choose I would personally pick the F30, but that's not to say the S4 was a bad car. I would recommend both to anyone - it just comes down to individual preference.
