Car sometimes jerky motion.

I couldn't find the right words for the title. This is not very easy to explain but when driving, I sometimes feel the car is not going along in a smooth motion. It's almost like I'm pressing the accelerator and then releasing it, pressing, releasing, pressing, releasing.
Anyone had anything like that?

Yes I have the same in my 420d GC. Reading various posts online and talking to work colleagues, it appears to be linked to the current EGR cooler issues.

Has yours been recalled?

Yes, it's booked in for Saturday. I'm also only getting around 40mpg, I've never had less than 45mpg. Is that related?

Sounds like EGR to me. Mine dropped from 45 to 40 when it was faulty and caused the same issues.

After visiting the dealer, please update this thread. Will be helpful to many forum members.

Sounds like the Cancun Taxi Driver Tap Dance. They all drive like that over there.

Seriously, I back the EGR diagnosis.

Mine did that before the EGR was replaced - always between 1-2000 rpm / pulling across a junction or roundabout.

Good news is that when it's done - you'll notice the car drives like new again in terms of power and performance.

Yep, I agree it sounds like the EGR, I had the same issue with my 420d (not so much fuel economy drop, so maybe that is cold weather related at present)

Those who have the recall booked please let us know what the outcome is. I can't find a dealer who has the parts in stock so haven't been able to book it in. :/

I had the same in my 420d, even after the egr was replaced. So not sure what was wrong with mine.

So is the EGR recall just on pre 2018 Diesels then?

Anyone experienced this with Petrol engined models?

After fitment of MPPK about two years ago, car developed identical symptoms, slight at first but much more severe now.......

Had the replacement EGR fitted on Saturday. MPG back to 45MPG this morning which is normal for winter (55mpg for summer (not bad for a commute from one side of the city to the other)).
The service guy said the EGR symptoms are Coolant low and a clutch smell in the cabin. He said what I was describing could be a valve issue but the car would report a valve fault. BMW Assist engineer said the same thing when I mentioned it to him a few months ago. I will report back at the end of the week. This jerky motion symptom isn't/wan't there all the time so I need to give it a few days to be sure it's gone.

Update: My car seems to be fixed since the EGR replacement. Car drives smooth again and mpg back up to normal.

Hi Guys, my 320d seems to be having all the symptoms described in here:

- Stuttering motion just under 2k revs
- Poor fuel consumption
- Starting to get a bit of a smell after driving
- Coolant light keeps appearing now and then
- Had the limp home mode come on a few times but then after re started its gone and all is fine

Only thing is mine is a 2017 car (built feb 2017). Are BMW likely to do anything if i take it in as mine as far as i'm aware is not within the recall years?

Thanks!

What does it say if you put your reg number into the DVSA recalls page?

Hi if I can help anyone mine had the low-end shudder as well like a bad hesitation on acceleration ,booked it in with dealer for today first thing, on Sunday I had the dreaded drivetrain error come up and went into limp mode, which i cleared with a quick blast at 50mph in 3rd gear for 5 miles and 2500 revs plus to burn the crud out. anyway was really dreading the dealer this morning thinking the car would be stored somewhere. was nearly floored when they said the part was in stock and would be repaired today.
it was checked as faulty and the whole unit replaced free of charge.
Checked under the hood and the whole unit is brand new, took the car for a good drive and its like brand new no judder at all was very impressed seems much quieter as well its 2 years old on a 66 plate if that helps anyone.
