Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 vs Michelin CrossClimate+

Hi there,

I need to put new tyres on my f30 330d.

I want to switch away from run flats.
The tyres will be used all year round.

I was veering towards the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 as recommended by this website (although I am open to other suggestions):

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyres_For/BMW/330d-M-...

However the snow performance seems to be lacking (not too surprising given they are a summer tyre)

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Therefore I was wondering about Michelin crossclimate instead:

https://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/michelin/cr...

I live in a rural part of the south east so I get no more than two weeks of snow a year but face driving on un-gritted roads when it does snow.

The rub here is that I'm compromising the cars performance for the rest of the year to make sure I'm OK for 2 weeks in winter!

Any thoughts on which option would be best for somebody in my position?

Thanks

It depends if you like sporty driving or not, the crossclimates will be fine for normal all year driving, but will lack the on the limit grip of the assy 3's.

Can you get the crossclimates in the right sizes though? Last time I looked they weren't available in 3 Series sizes.

I want to live where you do in the south east that sees two weeks of snow per year!

We barely get two days of snow in my south east, which to my mind at least makes absolutely no sense to fit anything other than standard tyres.

I've run the cross climates in the past on a 3 series and they are good enough all year round, unless you track your car and push it too the limits.

Dry performance is reasonable and they are comparable to an average summer tyre.
I found them slightly better in the wet than the continental premium contact 2 RFT's they replaced.
Snow traction is very good and they will keep you moving.
They aren't as good as the best full winter tyres on ice, but still a lot better than summer tyres.

Winter and all season tyres arent just about traction on snow. They offer better grip in general when temps are down below 7 degrees.

I swapped to winters in sept/oct and havent noticed any negatives over the original bridgestones which only covered 1k miles before the swap.

Depending how long you intend to keep the car, a second set of wheels with winter tyres is probably the best option here.

Yes the modern winter tyres are very good, I drove the X3 home from London on the P Zero PZ4's and have been driving it on Goodyear Ultragrip Performance Gen 1's since and I really haven't noticed any difference!

I run cross climates on our e87, as said before you loose out on the 10/10ths performance compared to summer/winter tyres but unless you time yourself on the morning commute / do track days you’ll be hard pushed to feel any noticeable difference, the biggest positive is their wet performance - so much better that the Bridgestone RE050 rft that they replaced

I'd get some decent summers like the Goodyear and if you're really worried about cold weather driving and you do a lot of it, get a set of winters as well. An all season tyre is always going to be a compromise
I sold my winter wheels and tyres nine ago as I really didn't need them, given how mild the weather is in London and the SE, and the mileage and journeys I typically do. If the weather gets really bad - which it might just be for one week a year - I use my wife's Fiesta for which we have a set of winters - although last year I didn't even bother putting them on

You have got to be careful not to be paranoid about the cold weather driving. IMO, you just slow down and drive much more carefully as opposed to adopting a set up which is OTT for 99% of the winter.

I know this is stupid question but can BMW void your warranty if you put non run flats on the car?

BMW UK emailed me a few months ago to confirm that I could fit either RF or non-RF tyres on my car, provided that they were BMW approved i.e. OE coded with the * mark. They didn't specifically mention warranty however
Other forum members will doubtless tell you otherwise
My car is under warranty so I'm not taking any risks. So, a big choice of RFs obviously and in my mixed 19s, some Michelin non-RFs

On the Camskill website, you can specify OECode under Filters. Select * and RSC

Or better still, select the tyre size option with 'OE BMW' specified in Blue text

You've lost me now sorry! I'm looking at Pilot sport 4s for my 19" wheels and found these two pages

https://www.camskill.co.uk/m55b4279s..._Sport_4_PS4_-

https://www.camskill.co.uk/m55b4510s...PS4_Acoustic_-

Is there a way on there to see if they have the OE BMW Specified on there?

Here are 2 links, assuming you're running mixed 19"'s (225/40 & 255/35):

https://www.camskill.co.uk/m55b0s561...5_40R19_OE_BMW

https://www.camskill.co.uk/m55b0s562..._Noise%3A_71dB

No idea which model these were approved for but they are BMW * marked
