Cracked Windshield
So last night I was driving on the highway and "POP" rock hits my windshield and takes out a nice chunk of glass. Crack is probably about quarter sized and right in my line of sight near the right side of the HUD. Only 750 miles on the car and I need a new windshield. Called BMW and they said $1200 for a new one, thankfully I have insurance that covers this. ( In Arizona this is way to common an issue not to have the coverage ). Thank goodness for the insurance, I was appalled at the cost of the new one. Tried to take a pic but nothing will turn out clearly.
Watch out for flying rocks out there! |

I had to change the windshield on my E90 and two days later it cracked again due to a small piece of rock. The same double change happened to a colleague of mine. Seems like the 3-series windshield breaks more easily than others.
Happened once on my Saab 9-5 driving the same road for five years and now it has happened twice in one and a half year for my E90. |

Is glass cover an optional extra on your car insurance or do you have to take out an additional policy.
Over here in the UK, I've never heard of having car insurance which didn't include glass cover. Perhaps it is something you can possibly opt out of here but based on the cost of windscreens you'd be mad to. Also if you have to make a claim for glass the excesses are much lower (~£75 (~$115)) than that would generally be for collision damage (generally zero if the windscreen can be repaired rather than replaced) and it won't affect your no-claims discount. |

Assume you have to get the replacement glass and installation directly through BMW due to the HUD? I'd hate to think of my insurance carrier trying to push me to a non-OEM windshield.

That was my initial thought, so I called them and said I had to start a claim with my insurance. So with that call they refered me to a glass replacement company they use, before agreeing to anything I did verify they were using OEM BMW factory glass. They said they would have to order it but it would be replaced with only OEM glass. I didn't want anything else on my brand new car(750 miles). So sometime next week they will have the glass and it will be replaced.

The windshield for a a car with a HUD is different than a non HUD car. That is why it cost an arm and a leg. Also, if you do not get the correct type of glass replacemnt your HUD display will be warped to look at.

They say in Denver, you average a new windshield every 2 years. I ended up getting a $50 deductible plan on my insurance to replace any window. When I got my first replacement, it turned out that they were offering non-OEM glass (albeit high quality) and the OEM would have cost about $500 more. If I wanted the OEM, that $500 would have had to come out of my pocket. This is one of the main reasons I'm shying away from the HUD option. Just too much to replace and I'm almost guaranteed to have to replace it at least once.

I don't think you have to worry to much about glass quality, they are all the same oem or not. I have no insurance and the dealer quoted me $1,500! I ended up using online site outsourced to a local glass shop and have it replaced for $320, at my doorstep, everything included. The glass is exactly the same as original, down to every line, dot and shadow.

It isn't at the same level of expense as your windshield, but I can relate. Arizona highways are terrible for rocks.... |
