B48 Critical Failure: Cracked Oil Filter Housing & Flange -> Blown Head Gasket
Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out to the community to share a catastrophic failure on my 2017 F33 420i (B48 engine) and to get some advice on how to proceed. A few days ago, the car suffered a sudden and massive coolant leak. After a teardown, the diagnosis was confirmed: the coolant flange cracked, and the oil filter housing (heat exchanger) failed internally as well. This led to a severe overheat, and unfortunately, the cylinder head is now warped/the head gasket is blown. The car has 130000 km and has been maintained strictly according to BMW's schedule. I knew the plastic components on the B-series engines were a weak point, but I didn't expect them to fail this early and take the whole head gasket with them. I’m currently weighing my options and would appreciate your input: 1. Rebuild vs. Replace: Given the B48's high compression and thermal management, is it worth resurfacing the head, or should I look for a complete donor engine? 2. Parts Upgrade: I’m planning to get the Rein Aluminum Coolant Flange and an aluminum OFH housing. Are there any other "while you're in there" parts (hoses, sensors) that I should swap to prevent this from happening again? 3. Goodwill/Recalls: Has anyone in Europe had success getting BMW to cover part of the costs (Goodwill) for this specific failure? I know there’s been a lot of talk about this being a design flaw. Any advice or technical insight would be greatly appreciated. For anyone else with a 2016-2018 B48: replace your plastic coolant parts before they leave you stranded. Thanks! |
