If you want low hassle, find a late M43 318i. It’s slower but will run forever with basic care.
If you want more power, the N42/N46 is fine as long as you’re proactive on cooling, CCV, and valve stem seals. Buy on maintenance history, not just mileage. A 200k km car with full service records will outlast a 120k km neglected one.
